Device, system and method for treating obesity
An obesity treatment device is provided, the device comprising: at least one operable stretching device implantable in an obese patient and adapted to stretch a portion of the patient's stomach wall and an operation device for operating the stretching device when implanted to stretch the stomach wall portion such that satiety is created.
1. An obesity treatment device comprising:
at least one operable stretching device implantable in an obese patient and adapted to stretch a portion of the patient's stomach wall from the outside thereof, such that a feeling of satiety is actively created, wherein the at least one operable stretching device is adapted to engage the stomach from the outside thereof and comprises a first engaging member configured to engage the stomach wall at a first position on the outside of the stomach and a second engaging member configured to engage the stomach wall at a second position on the outside of the stomach, wherein the first and second engaging members comprises at least one of:
a fixation adapted to be sutured or stapled to the outside of the stomach wall, for fixating the engaging members, and
a body adapted to be invaginated in the stomach wall from the outside thereof, for fixating the engaging members, wherein the device further comprises:
a respective leg connected to each of the first and second engaging members; and
an implantable non-invasive operation device for non-invasively operating the stretching device without any penetration of the stomach wall, when implanted, wherein the fixation or body of the first and second engaging members are connected to the operation device via the respective leg, and wherein the operation device is configured to operate the fixation or body of the first and second engaging member by exerting a force on the respective leg so as to move the first and second engaging members away from each other to stretch the stomach wall portion such that a feeling of satiety is created.
2. The device according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second engaging members comprises a tissue growth promoting structure adapted to be in contact with the stomach wall to secure long term attachment of the stretching device to the stomach wall.
3. The device according to claim 2 , wherein the structure comprises a net like structure.
4. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the stretching device is adapted to be invaginated by the stomach wall by means of stomach-to-stomach sutures or staplers.
5. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the stretching device comprises a body adapted to fill out a volume defined by wall portions of the stomach.
6. The device according to claim 5 , wherein the body has varying circumference to be better adapted to be kept in place invaginated by stomach wall portions of the patient.
7. The device according to claim 5 , wherein the body is shaped like an egg or a kidney.
8. The device according to claim 1 , further comprising at least two operable stretching devices adapted to stretch at least two different portions of the stomach wall.
9. The device according to claim 8 , wherein the device is adapted to be postoperatively and non-invasively regulated, and adapted to be regulated from time to time such that at a first time one of the stretching devices stretches one of the portions of the stomach wall and at a second time the other of the stretching devices stretches the other portion of the stomach wall.
10. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the stretching device comprises a mechanically regulated stretching device.
11. The device according to claim 10 , further comprising a motor or a pump for regulating the stretching device.
12. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the operation device comprises a subcutaneous switch adapted to be non-invasively operated by manually pressing the switch for the operation of the stretching device.
13. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the stretching device is adapted to have the ability to change shape and/or size substantially without the presence of fibrotic tissue substantially hindering or impeding the function of the stretching device.
14. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the device further comprises at least one of; an internal energy source, a wireless energy receiver for non-invasively energizing the device with wireless energy and an energy receiver receiving wireless energy for charging the internal energy source.
15. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the implantable non-invasive operation device comprises a receiving unit adapted to receive a control signal for initiating non-invasive operation of the stretching device.
