Abstract

The present invention relates to fire resistant composite materials and to fire resistant fabric materials and mattresses made therefrom. The composite materials include (a) a substrate selected from the group consisting of cotton, rayon, lyocell, wool, silk and blends thereof; and (b) a coating consisting essentially of water, ammonium polyphosphate, binder material and cellulose filler material. The binder material bonds the ammonium polyphosphate and cellulose filler materials together and to the substrate such that the substrate is coated with the coating.

Claims (19)

1. A composite material comprising:

(a) a planar substrate selected from the group consisting of cotton, rayon, lyocell, wool, silk and blends thereof; and

(b) a film coating coated on one side of the planar substrate, wherein the coating consists essentially of about 10% to about 35% by weight water, about 25% to about 55% by weight flame retardant, about 15% to about 35% by weight acrylic binder material and about 5% to about 15% by weight cellulosic filler material selected from the group consisting of cotton, starch, sawdust and mixtures thereof,

wherein said flame retardant in said coating consists of ammonium polyphosphate and said binder material bonds the ammonium polyphosphate and cellulosic filler material together and to the substrate such that the substrate is coated with said coating, and wherein said composite material is drapable.

2. A composite material comprising:

(a) a cotton planar substrate; and

(b) a film coating coated on one side of the planar substrate, wherein the coating consists essentially of about 10% by weight water, about 80% by weight flame retardant and about 10% by weight acrylic binder material,

wherein said flame retardant in said coating consists of ammonium polyphosphate and said binder material bonds the ammonium polyphosphate to the substrate such that the substrate is coated with said coating,

wherein said composite material is drapable, and

wherein said cotton planar substrate has a fabric weight over 4.0 oz./yd. 2 .

3. The composite material according to claim 1 , wherein said substrate is coated on both sides with said coating.

4. The composite material according to claim 1 or 3 , wherein said material further includes a water repellent material.

5. The composite material according to claim 1 or 3 , wherein said material further includes an antifungal material.

6. The composite material according to claim 1 or 3 , wherein said material further includes an antibacterial material.

7. The composite material according to claim 1 or 3 , wherein said material further includes a surface friction agent.

8. The composite material according to claim 1 or 3 , wherein said material further includes an algaecide.

9. The composite material according to claim 1 or 3 , wherein said material is colored with dye.

10. A mattress fabric comprising a decorative fabric and a composite material according to claim 1 or 2 .

11. A mattress comprising the mattress fabric of claim 10 .
