Abstract

It has been unexpectedly found that the solvent extracted aromatic cut of heavy vacuum gas oil can be oxidized to produce an adhesive composition that has all the needed attributes of a self seal adhesive for asphalt roofing shingles. This self seal adhesive composition offers numerous benefits and advantages over conventional self seal adhesives for roofing applications. For instance, it does not require any volatile organic solvents and is accordingly environmentally friendly. Additionally, it does not contain any asphalt or polymers and will not phase separate and accordingly offers excellent long term stability.

Claims (16)

1. An oxidized aromatic viscoelastic resin composition wherein said composition consists of an oxidized solvent extracted aromatic cut of heavy vacuum gas oil and a mineral filler, wherein the oxidized solvent extracted aromatic cut of heavy vacuum gas oil is at least 95% soluble in normal-heptane, wherein the mineral filler is present at a level which is within the range of 5 weight percent to 40 weight percent, and wherein the solvent extracted aromatic cut of heavy vacuum gas oil is essentially free of an aliphatic component.

2. An oxidized aromatic viscoelastic resin composition as specified in claim 1 wherein the oxidized aromatic viscoelastic resin has a softening point which is within the range of 170° F. to 250° F.

3. An oxidized aromatic viscoelastic resin composition as specified in claim 2 wherein the oxidized solvent extracted aromatic cut of heavy vacuum gas oil is at least 98% soluble in normal-heptane.

4. An oxidized aromatic viscolelastic resin composition as specified in claim 3 wherein the oxidized aromatic viscoelastic resin exhibits ultraviolet fluorescence.

5. An oxidized aromatic viscolelastic resin composition as specified in claim 3 wherein the oxidized aromatic viscoelastic resin contains carbonyl functionality.

6. An oxidized aromatic viscolelastic resin composition as specified in claim 5 wherein the carbonyl functionality includes ketone moeties.

7. An oxidized aromatic viscoelastic resin composition as specified in claim 1 wherein the mineral filler is present at a level which is within the range of 10 weight percent to 30 weight percent.

8. An oxidized aromatic viscoelastic resin composition as specified in claim 7 wherein the mineral filler is limestone.

9. An oxidized aromatic viscoelastic resin composition as specified in claim 7 wherein the mineral filler is clay.

10. An oxidized aromatic viscoelastic resin composition as specified in claim 7 wherein the mineral filler is talc.

11. An oxidized aromatic viscoelastic resin composition as specified in claim 7 wherein the mineral filler is fly ash.

12. An oxidized aromatic viscoelastic resin composition as specified in claim 7 wherein the mineral filler is volcanic ash.

13. An oxidized aromatic viscoelastic resin composition as specified in claim 7 wherein the mineral filler is graphite.

14. An oxidized aromatic viscoelastic resin composition as specified in claim 7 wherein the mineral filler is carbon black.

15. An oxidized aromatic viscoelastic resin composition as specified in claim 7 wherein the mineral filler is silica.

16. An oxidized aromatic viscoelastic resin composition as specified in claim 1 wherein the mineral filler is selected from the group consisting of limestone, clay, talc, fly ash, volcanic ash, graphite, carbon black, and silica.
