Abstract

A system and method for communicating software images includes a local area network, a client device and a local area network server that associates the client device and stores a client device location and a client identifier therein. A central distribution server stores the client device location and the client identifier therein and communicates a client reboot signal to the local area network server. The local area network sever communicates the client reboot signal to the client device. The client device reboots in response to the reboot signal.

Claims (34)

1. A method comprising:

associating a client device with a local network server in a local area network;

storing a client device location, client identifier and client device model number in the local network server;

storing the client device location and client identifier in a central distribution server;

registering the client device with a state variable of the local network server;

generating a client reboot signal at the central distribution server based on the client device location and the client identifier;

communicating the client reboot signal and the client identifier from the central distribution server to the local network server;

changing the state variable at the local network server to indicate a desired reboot in response to the client reboot signal;

monitoring, at the client device, the state variable through the local area network; and

rebooting the client device in response to the state variable indicating the desired reboot.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein associating the client device comprises associating a client rendering device with the local network server.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein associating the client device comprises associating a client television rendering device with the local network server.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the client device is incorporated into a display device.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the client device and the central distribution server are not directly connected.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising polling the local network server from the client.

7. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein generating a client reboot signal at the central distribution server comprises generating the client reboot signal at the central distribution server for troubleshooting the client device.

8. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein storing the client device location and client identifier in the local network server comprises storing a client device name in the local network server.

9. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein storing the client device location and client identifier in the local network server comprises storing the client device location and a unique client device name for the local area network.

10. A system comprising:

a local area network;

a client device;

a local area network server that is associated with the client device and that stores a client device location and a client identifier therein; and

a central distribution server that stores the client device location, the client identifier and the client device model number therein and communicates a client reboot signal to the local area network server;

said local network server changing the state variable at the local network server to indicate a desired reboot in response to the client reboot signal;

said client device monitoring the state variable through the local area network; and

wherein the client device reboots in response to the state variable indicating the desire reboot.

11. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the reboot signal is based on the client device location and client identifier.

12. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the client device comprises a client rendering device.

13. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the client device comprises a client television rendering device.

14. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the client device is incorporated into a display device.

15. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the client device and the central distribution server are not directly connected.

16. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the client polls the local network server.

17. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the local network server registers the client device to a state variable within the server, and wherein the local network server changes the state variable to form a changed state variable and communicates the client reboot signal in response to changing the changed state variable.

18. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the client reboot signal corresponds to troubleshooting the client device.
