Abstract

A system for conveying mailpieces along a conveyance path and singulating a mailpiece from a stack of mailpieces along the conveyance path. The system includes a first conveyance for conveying mailpieces at a variable velocity and a second conveyance, downstream of the first conveyance, for conveying mailpieces at a constant velocity along the conveyance path. A series of optical sensors extends from the first to the second conveyance and is operative to issue a gap signal indicative of the relative spacing between sequential mailpieces along the conveyance path. A processor is responsive to the gap signal and is operative to control the first conveyance to decrease the relative spacing between sequential mailpieces when the gap signal exceeds a threshold value.

Claims (24)

1. A system for conveying mailpieces along a feed path and singulating a mailpiece from a stack of mailpieces along the feed path, comprising

a first conveyance for conveying mailpieces at a variable velocity, the first conveyance including a drive belt, a variable velocity motor driving the drive belt, a singulating belt opposing the drive belt, the drive and singulating belts operative to accept and apply a friction force to the stack of mailpieces such that one of the mailpieces is singulated therefrom and conveyed to the second conveyance, and a mechanism operative to displace the singulating belt toward the drive belt to vary the friction force applied to the stack of mailpieces such that the relative spacing between sequential mailpieces is varied;

a second conveyance, downstream of the first conveyance, for conveying mailpieces at a constant velocity along the feed path,

a series of optical sensors extending from the first to the second conveyance, and operative to issue a gap signal indicative of the relative spacing between sequential mailpieces along the feed path; and

a processor, responsive to the gap signal and operative to control the first conveyance to decrease the relative spacing between sequential mailpieces when the gap signal exceeds a threshold value,

wherein the drive and singulating belts define an original thickness dimension and an initial position relative to each other, and further comprising a system for determining a thickness dimension of a particular mailpiece, and a means for determining when a difference between the sum of the original thickness dimensions of each of the belts and the thickness dimension of the mailpiece exceeds a threshold value.

2. The system according to claim 1 wherein each of the drive and singulating belts include a plurality of belts which alternately interleave such that the belts produce a corrugated force on each of the mailpieces.

3. The system according to claim 2 wherein the mechanism further includes at least a pair of rolling elements separated by a structural arm which is pivotally mounted to a support structure about a rotational axis and an actuator operative to rotate the singulating belts about the axis toward the drive belts to impose the variable friction force to the stack of mailpieces, wherein the singulating belts are disposed about the pair of rolling elements.

4. The system according to claim 1 wherein the second conveyance includes a pair of compliant rollers defining a nip for accepting the each of the mailpieces conveyed along the feed path.

5. The system according to claim 1 wherein the drive and singulating belts define an initial position relative to each other, and further comprising a system for determining the change in initial position of each of the belts as a mailpiece is conveyed therebetween and the thickness of each mailpiece.

6. A method for conveying mailpieces along a feed path and singulating a mailpiece from a stack of mailpieces along the feed path, comprising the steps of:

conveying mailpieces by a first conveyance at a variable velocity, the first conveyance including a drive belt, a variable velocity motor driving the drive belt; a singulating belt opposing the drive belt; the drive and singulating belts operative to accept and apply a friction force to the stack of mailpieces such that one of the mailpieces is singulated therefrom and conveyed to the second conveyance, and a mechanism operative to displace the singulating belt toward the drive belt to vary the friction force applied to the stack of mailpieces such that the relative spacing between sequential mailpieces is varied;

conveying mailpieces by a second conveyance, downstream of the first conveyance, for conveying mailpieces at a constant velocity along the feed path,

sensing a gap indicative of the relative spacing between sequential mailpieces along the feed path, and

decreasing the relative spacing between sequential mailpieces when the gap exceeds a threshold value,

wherein the drive and singulating belts define an original thickness dimension and an initial position relative to each other, and further comprising determining a thickness dimension of a particular mailpiece; and

determining when a difference between the sum of the original thickness dimensions of each of the belts and the thickness dimension of the mailpiece exceeds a threshold value.

7. The method according to claim 6 wherein the step of sensing a gap includes providing a series of optical sensors extending from the first to the second conveyance, to sense the gap between the trailing edge of one mailpiece and the leading edge of a subsequent mailpiece.

8. The method according to claim 6 wherein each of the drive and singulating belts include a plurality of belts which alternately interleave such that the belts produce a corrugated force on each of the mailpieces.

9. The method according to claim 8 wherein the singulating belts are disposed about at least a pair of rolling elements separated by a structural arm which is pivotally mounted to a support structure about a rotational axis, and further comprising an actuator operative to rotate the singulating belts about the axis toward the drive belts to impose the variable friction force to the stack of mailpieces.

10. The method according to claim 6 wherein the variable velocity motor of the drive belt increases velocity when the friction force applied by the singulating belt decreases.

11. The method according to claim 6 wherein the variable velocity motor of the drive belt decreases velocity when the friction force applied by the singulating belt increases.

12. The method according to claim 6 wherein the second conveyance includes a pair of compliant rollers defining a nip for accepting the each of the mailpieces conveyed along the feed path.

13. The method according to claim 6 wherein the drive and singulating belts define an initial position relative to each other, and further comprising a system for determining the change in initial position of each of the belts as a mailpiece is conveyed therebetween and the thickness of each mailpiece.
