Abstract

Methods and compositions for modulating an immune response in a subject are provided. Methods include administering to the subject a composition comprising an effective amount of a lymphocyte differentiation factor, e.g., protein A (PA), sufficient to modulate the immune response. Compositions include a lymphocyte differentiation factor, e.g., protein A (PA), in an amount less than 1 μg.

Claims (21)

1. A method for treating psoriasis in a subject with or at risk of psoriasis, comprising administering to the subject a monomeric protein A (PA) composition comprising an effective amount of protein A (PA), wherein the PA in the composition consists of monomeric protein A (PA) sufficient to treat the psoriasis.

2. A method for treating scleroderma in a subject with or at risk of scleroderma, comprising administering to the subject a monomeric protein A (PA) composition comprising an effective amount of protein A (PA), wherein the PA in the composition consists of monomeric protein A (PA) sufficient to treat the scleroderma.

3. A method for reducing an inflammatory response in a subject caused by psoriasis or scleroderma, comprising administering to the subject a monomeric protein A (PA) composition comprising an effective amount of protein A (PA), wherein the PA in the composition consists of monomeric protein A (PA) sufficient to reduce an inflammatory response caused by psoriasis or scleroderma.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the inflammatory response is chronic or acute.

5. A method for treating inflammation in a subject caused by psoriasis or scleroderma, comprising administering to the subject a monomeric protein A (PA) composition comprising an effective amount of protein A (PA), wherein the PA in the composition consists of monomeric protein A (PA) sufficient to reduce the inflammation caused by psoriasis or scleroderma.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the inflammation is chronic or acute.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method results in a reduction in severity of a symptom of psoriasis.

8. The method of claim 2 , wherein the method results in a reduction in severity of a symptom of scleroderma.

9. The method of claim 3 , wherein the method results in a reduction in severity of a symptom of the inflammatory response.

10. The method of claim 5 , wherein the method results in a reduction in severity of inflammation.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the symptom comprises swelling, pain, skeletal joint stiffness, or tissue or cell damage.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the symptom comprises swelling, pain, headache, fever, nausea, skeletal joint stiffness, or tissue or cell damage.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the symptom comprises swelling, pain, headache, fever, nausea, skeletal joint stiffness, or tissue or cell damage.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the symptom comprises swelling, pain, headache, fever, nausea, skeletal joint stiffness, or tissue or cell damage.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject is a human.

16. The method of claim 2 , wherein the subject is a human.

17. The method of claim 3 , wherein the subject is a human.

18. The method of claim 5 , wherein the subject is a human.

19. The method of claim 1 , 2 , 3 or 5 , wherein the monomeric PA composition is administered systemically.

20. The method of claim 1 , 2 , 3 or 5 , wherein the monomeric PA composition is administered locally.

21. The method of claim 1 , 2 , 3 or 5 , wherein the monomeric PA composition is administered intravenously, intramuscularly, intraperitoneally, intradermally, subcutaneously, intracavity, transdermally, parenterally, or transmucosally.
