Abstract

An ultrasonic surgical clamp coagulator apparatus is configured to effect cutting, coagulation, and clamping of tissue by cooperation of a clamping mechanism of the apparatus with an associated ultrasonic end-effector. The handle of the apparatus is configured to permit hand activation for cutting, coagulation, and clamping of tissue during surgical procedures. In order to promote convenient and efficient use of the apparatus, the fingertip controls are provided directly into the disposal shears handle in a position that allows surgeons to activate the device without repositioning their hand. The two buttons provide independent control of the two power levels available from the generator, matching the two foot pedal configuration of the prior art.

Claims (24)

1 . A housing having a proximal opening for accepting a handpiece for providing ultrasonic energy to an ultrasonic waveguide and a distal opening for accepting the ultrasonic waveguide, wherein the proximal opening and distal opening define a longitudinal axis, the housing comprising;

a) a user interface having a first position and a second position for moving a clamp arm from a first position to a second position; and

b) a first switch positioned adjacent the distal opening for controlling a first level of ultrasonic energy delivered by the handpiece.

2 . The housing of claim 1 , wherein the housing comprises a second switch adjacent to the first switch for controlling a second level of ultrasonic energy delivered by the handpiece.

3 . The housing of claim 1 further comprising at least one electrical circuit comprising at least one electronic component and a transducer connector configured to electrically connect the transducer to the at least one electrical circuit.

4 . The housing of claim 3 , wherein the first switch is electrically connected to the at least one electrical circuit.

5 . The housing of claim 1 , wherein the first switch lies within a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

6 . The housing of claim 2 , wherein the first and second switch lie within a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

7 . The housing of claim 2 further comprising at least one electrical circuit comprising at least one electronic component and a transducer connector configured to electrically connect the transducer to the at least one electrical circuit.

8 . The housing of claim 7 , wherein the first and second switch are electrically connected to the at least one electrical circuit.

9 . A housing having a proximal opening for accepting a handpiece for providing ultrasonic energy to an ultrasonic waveguide and a distal opening for accepting the ultrasonic waveguide, the housing comprising;

a) a user interface; and

b) a first switch positioned adjacent the distal opening and user interface for controlling a first level of ultrasonic energy delivered by the handpiece.

10 . The housing of claim 9 , wherein the housing comprises a second switch adjacent to the first switch for controlling a second level of ultrasonic energy delivered by the handpiece.

11 . The housing of claim 9 further comprising at least one electrical circuit comprising at least one electronic component and a transducer connector configured to electrically connect the transducer to the at least one electrical circuit.

12 . The housing of claim 11 , wherein the first switch is electrically connected to the at least one electrical circuit.

13 . The housing of claim 9 , wherein the first switch lies within a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

14 . The housing of claim 10 further comprising at least one electrical circuit comprising at least one electronic component and a transducer connector configured to electrically connect the transducer to the at least one electrical circuit.

15 . The housing of claim 14 , wherein the first and second switch are electrically connected to the at least one electrical circuit.

16 . The housing of claim 10 , wherein the second switch lies within a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

17 . The housing of claim 9 , wherein the first switch is disposed between the longitudinal axis and the user interface.

18 . The housing of claim 9 , wherein the first switch is disposed between the distal opening and the user interface.

19 . The housing of claim 10 , wherein the second switch is disposed between the longitudinal axis and the user interface.

20 . The housing of claim 10 , wherein the second switch is disposed between the distal opening and the user interface.
