Abstract

A dialysis system includes an extracorporeal circuit including a dialyzer; a dialysis fluid circuit including a first balance chamber, a second balance chamber, a fresh dialysis fluid pump in fluid communication with first and second fresh compartments of the first and second balance chambers, respectively, the first and second fresh compartments in fluid communication with a fresh dialysate fluid inlet of the dialyzer, and a spent dialysis fluid pump in fluid communication with first and second spent compartments of the first and second balance chambers, respectively, the spent dialysis fluid pump also in fluid communication with a spent dialysis fluid outlet of the dialyzer; and wherein the system is configured to run a priming sequence that uses (i) at least one of the fresh and spent dialysis fluid pumps and the first and second balance chambers to pump dialysis fluid through the dialysis fluid circuit and (ii) at least one of the fresh and spent dialysis fluid pumps to pump dialysis fluid through the dialyzer and into the extracorporeal circuit.

Claims (31)

1. A dialysis system comprising:

an extracorporeal circuit including a dialyzer;

a dialysis fluid circuit including

a first balance chamber,

a second balance chamber,

a fresh dialysis fluid pump in fluid communication with first and second fresh compartments of the first and second balance chambers, respectively, the first and second fresh compartments in fluid communication with a fresh dialysate fluid inlet of the dialyzer, and

a spent dialysis fluid pump in fluid communication with first and second spent compartments of the first and second balance chambers, respectively, the spent dialysis fluid pump also in fluid communication with a spent dialysis fluid outlet of the dialyzer; and

wherein the system is configured to run

(a) a priming sequence that uses at least one of the fresh and spent dialysis fluid pumps and the first and second balance chambers to pump dialysis fluid (i) through the dialysis fluid circuit and (ii) through the dialyzer and into the extracorporeal circuit, and

(b) a bolus sequence in which spent dialysis fluid from the spent compartment of the first balance chamber is sent to the spent compartment of the second balance chamber to drive fresh dialysis fluid to the dialyzer through the fresh dialysis fluid inlet line without a corresponding amount of spent dialysis fluid being driven to a drain.

2. The dialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the priming sequence further includes occluding a line of the extracorporeal circuit at least one time.

3. The dialysis system of claim 2 , which includes at least one manual clamp for occluding the line.

4. The dialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the extracorporeal circuit includes an air trap, and which includes using a volume of the air trap in the priming sequence.

5. The dialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the extracorporeal circuit includes a blood pump, and wherein the priming sequence includes operating the blood pump.

6. The dialysis system of claim 5 , wherein operating the blood pump includes reversing the blood pump at least one time.

7. The dialysis system of claim 5 , wherein each of the fresh and spent dialysis fluid pumps and the blood pump are membrane pumps.

8. The dialysis system of claim 5 , wherein each of the fresh and spent dialysis fluid pumps and the blood pump include fluid carrying portions that are located in a dialysis fluid cassette.

9. The dialysis system of claim 8 , wherein the dialysis fluid cassette is a single dialysis fluid cassette.

10. The dialysis system of claim 5 , wherein the priming sequence includes operating at least one extracorporeal circuit valve with the operation of the blood pump.

11. The dialysis system of claim 9 , wherein the fluid carrying portions of the blood pump and the at least one valve are located in a single dialysis fluid cassette.

12. The dialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the priming sequence includes placing arterial and venous lines of the extracorporeal circuit in fluid communication with each other.

13. The dialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the bolus sequence includes pumping with the fresh dialysis pump to send the spent dialysis fluid from the spent compartment of the first balance chamber to the spent compartment of the second balance chamber to drive fresh dialysis fluid to the dialyzer through the fresh dialysis fluid inlet line.

14. The dialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the bolus sequence includes pumping fresh dialysis fluid to send the spent dialysis fluid from the spent compartment of the first balance chamber to the spent compartment of the second balance chamber to drive fresh dialysis fluid to the dialyzer through the fresh dialysis fluid inlet line.

15. A dialysis system comprising:

an extracorporeal circuit including a dialyzer;

a dialysis fluid circuit including

a first balance chamber,

a second balance chamber,

a fresh dialysis fluid pump in fluid communication with first and second fresh compartments of the first and second balance chambers, respectively, the first and second fresh compartments in fluid communication with a fresh dialysate fluid inlet of the dialyzer, and

a spent dialysis fluid pump in fluid communication with first and second spent compartments of the first and second balance chambers, respectively, the spent dialysis fluid pump also in fluid communication with a spent dialysis fluid outlet of the dialyzer; and

wherein the system is configured to run a bolus sequence in which spent dialysis fluid from the spent compartment of the first balance chamber is sent to the spent compartment of the second balance chamber to drive fresh dialysis fluid to the dialyzer through the fresh dialysis fluid inlet line without a corresponding amount of spent dialysis fluid being driven to a drain.
