Abstract

A chemical gas sensor formed from a nonwoven material is described. The gas sensor includes a flexible, gas-permeable, nonwoven web-based material substrate having a matrix that is composed of a plurality of inert thermoplastic, pulp, cellulose or staple fibers as either a major or minor portion, with a plurality of gas-sensitive fibers formed from a polymer that can absorb volatile organic compounds (VOC), and a plurality of electrically conductive fibers. The gas-sensitive fibers are intermixed with and associated spatially among a network of adjacent electrically conductive fibers, such that a change in physical morphology of said gas-sensitive fibers as a result of interacting with volatile organic compounds, causes a change in dielectric properties that disrupts said network of adjacent electrically conductive fibers. The sensor can be configured as either a resistive or a capacitive chemisensor.

Claims (13)

1. A chemical gas sensor comprising:

a flexible, gas-permeable, nonwoven web-based material substrate having a matrix that is composed of a plurality of inert thermoplastic, pulp, cellulose or staple fibers as either a major or minor portion, with a plurality of gas-sensitive fibers formed from a polymer that can absorb volatile organic compounds (VOC), and a plurality of electrically conductive fibers;

said gas-sensitive fibers are intermixed with and associated spatially among a network of adjacent electrically conductive fibers, such that a change in physical morphology of said gas-sensitive fibers as a result of interacting with volatile organic compounds, causes a change in physical or dielectric properties that disrupts said network of adjacent electrically conductive fibers;

said nonwoven-based material having a gas permeability of greater than 200 sq. microns of air;

wherein said gas-sensitive fibers are formed from poly-ethylene-vinyl acetate (PEVA).

2. The chemical gas sensor according to claim 1 , wherein said flexible nonwoven matrix is a stand-alone sheet for a resistive sensor.

3. The chemical gas sensor according to claim 1 , wherein said flexible nonwoven matrix is situated between two conductive layers to form a capacitor.

4. The chemical gas sensor according to claim 3 , wherein said conductive layers are sheets of conductive paper comprising carbon fibers.

5. The chemical gas sensor according to claim 1 , wherein said VOCs include aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, triethylamine, benzaldehyde, ammonia, marcaptans, dimethyl disulfide, alcohol vapor, and water vapor.

6. The chemical gas sensor according to claim 1 , wherein said gas-sensitive fibers comprise from about 5 wt. % to about 95 wt. % of said nonwoven matrix.

7. The chemical gas sensor according to claim 1 , wherein said electrically conductive fibers comprise from about 5 wt. % to about 80 wt. % of said entire nonwoven matrix.

8. The chemical gas sensor according to claim 1 , wherein said flexible nonwoven matrix is sensitive to a relative resistivity change between about 1000 Ohms to about 10,000,000 Ohms.

9. The chemical gas sensor according to claim 1 , wherein said flexible nonwoven matrix is sensitive to a change of at least about 10-100 pF, when arranged as a capacitive chemisensor.
