Abstract

A method for exiting receiver processing in a FLO-EV receiver comprises receiving a communication signal comprising at least one received symbol, deriving a channel performance metric based on the received symbol, determining whether the metric exceeds a threshold, and when the metric exceeds the threshold, providing a logic signal to signal receiver processing cessation.

Claims (100)

1. A system for reducing power consumption in an Enhanced Forward Link Only (FLO-EV) receiver, comprising:

a receiver configured to receive a communication signal comprising at least one received symbol;

at least one channel performance indicator corresponding to the received symbol;

a channel parameter estimate element configured to provide a channel energy profile for the received symbol;

an interference variance element configured to receive the at least one channel performance indicator and provide an interference variance estimate for the received symbol;

a mutual information calculation element configured to receive the interference variance estimate and the channel estimate, the mutual information calculation element configured to develop a metric for the received symbol; and

a processor element configured to receive the metric and provide a logic signal to signal receiver processing cessation when the metric exceeds a threshold.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the interference variance estimate element further comprises:

logic configured to normalize the interference variance estimate using the at least one channel performance indicator.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the channel parameter estimate element further comprises:

logic to determine a channel energy profile per subcarrier of the received symbol.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mutual information calculation element further comprises logic configured to:

determine an instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for each subcarrier of the received symbol; and

determine the metric using the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the mutual information calculation element further comprises a buffer in which the metric is located.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the processor receives the metric and determines whether the metric exceeds a threshold before providing the logic signal to signal receiver processing cessation.

7. A method for reducing power consumption in an Enhanced Forward Link Only (FLO-EV) a receiver, comprising:

receiving a communication signal comprising at least one received symbol;

providing at least one channel performance indicator corresponding to the received symbol;

estimating a channel energy profile for the received symbol;

generating an interference variance estimate for the received symbol;

using the interference variance estimate and the channel estimate to derive a metric for the received symbol;

determining whether the metric exceeds a threshold; and

when the metric exceeds the threshold, providing a logic signal to signal receiver processing cessation.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising

normalizing the interference variance estimate using the at least one channel performance indicator.

9. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

determining a channel energy profile per subcarrier of the received symbol.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein deriving a metric for the received symbol further comprises:

determining an instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for each subcarrier of the received symbol; and

determining the metric using the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising buffering the metric.

12. A portable communication device, comprising:

a receiver configured to receive a communication signal comprising at least one received symbol;

at least one channel performance indicator corresponding to the received symbol;

a channel parameter estimate element configured to provide a channel energy profile for the received symbol;

an interference variance element configured to receive the at least one channel performance indicator and provide an interference variance estimate for the received symbol;

a mutual information calculation element configured to receive the interference variance estimate and the channel estimate, the mutual information calculation element configured to develop a metric for the received symbol; and

a processor element configured to receive the metric and provide a logic signal to signal receiver processing cessation when the metric exceeds a threshold.

13. The portable communication device of claim 12 , wherein the interference variance estimate element further comprises:

logic configured to normalize the interference variance estimate using the at least one channel performance indicator.

14. The portable communication device of claim 12 , wherein the channel parameter estimate element further comprises:

logic to determine a channel energy profile per subcarrier of the received symbol.

15. The portable communication device of claim 12 , wherein the mutual information calculation element further comprises logic configured to:

determine an instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for each subcarrier of the received symbol; and

determine the metric using the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

16. The portable communication device of claim 15 , wherein the mutual information calculation element further comprises a buffer in which the metric is located.

17. The portable communication device of claim 16 , wherein the processor receives the metric and determines whether the metric exceeds a threshold before providing the logic signal to signal receiver processing cessation.

18. A method for reducing power consumption in a portable communication device, comprising:

receiving a communication signal comprising at least one received symbol;

providing at least one channel performance indicator corresponding to the received symbol;

estimating a channel energy profile for the received symbol;

generating an interference variance estimate for the received symbol;

using the interference variance estimate and the channel estimate to derive a metric for the received symbol;

determining whether the metric exceeds a threshold; and

when the metric exceeds the threshold, providing a logic signal to signal receiver processing cessation.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising

normalizing the interference variance estimate using the at least one channel performance indicator.

20. The method of claim 18 , further comprising:

determining a channel energy profile per subcarrier of the received symbol.

21. The method of claim 18 , wherein deriving a metric for the received symbol further comprises:

determining an instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for each subcarrier of the received symbol; and

determining the metric using the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

22. The method of claim 21 , further comprising:

buffering the metric.

23. A portable communication device, comprising:

means for receiving a communication signal comprising at least one received symbol;

means for providing at least one channel performance indicator corresponding to the received symbol;

means for estimating a channel energy profile for the received symbol;

means for generating an interference variance estimate for the received symbol;

means for using the interference variance estimate and the channel estimate to derive a metric for the received symbol;

means for determining whether the metric exceeds a threshold; and

means for, when the metric exceeds the threshold, providing a logic signal to signal receiver processing cessation.

24. The portable communication device of claim 23 , further comprising

means for normalizing the interference variance estimate using the at least one channel performance indicator.

25. The portable communication device of claim 23 , further comprising:

means for determining a channel energy profile per subcarrier of the received symbol.

26. The portable communication device of claim 23 , wherein the deriving a metric for the received symbol further comprises:

determining an instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for each subcarrier of the received symbol; and

determining the metric using the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

27. The portable communication device of claim 26 , further comprising:

means for buffering the metric.

28. A computer program product, comprising:

a non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising:

code for causing a computer to receive a communication signal comprising at least one received symbol;

code for causing a computer to provide at least one channel performance indicator corresponding to the received symbol;

code for causing a computer to estimate a channel energy profile for the received symbol;

code for causing a computer to generate an interference variance estimate for the received symbol;

code for causing a computer to use the interference variance estimate and the channel estimate to derive a metric for the received symbol;

code for causing a computer to determine whether the metric exceeds a threshold; and

code for causing a computer to, when the metric exceeds the threshold, provide a logic signal to signal receiver processing cessation.

29. The computer program product of claim 28 , further comprising:

code for causing a computer to normalize the interference variance estimate using the at least one channel performance indicator.

30. The computer program product of claim 28 , further comprising:

code for causing a computer to determine a channel energy profile per subcarrier of the received symbol.

31. The computer program product of claim 28 , wherein code for causing a computer to derive a metric for the received symbol further comprises:

code for causing a computer to determine an instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for each subcarrier of the received symbol; and

code for causing a computer to determine the metric using the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

32. The computer program product of claim 31 , further comprising:

code for causing a computer to buffer the metric.
