Abstract

Ambulatory infusion pumps, pump assemblies, cartridges, baseplates, cannulas, insertion tools, and related components as well as combinations thereof and related methods.

Claims (38)

1. An infusion pump apparatus, comprising:

a medicament cartridge including a medicament reservoir, a plunger, an outlet port and a seal that seals the outlet port; and

an infusion pump assembly including

a housing having a cartridge receiving area,

a plunger pusher in the housing,

a drive mechanism, that drives the plunger pusher and has a motor, a lead screw, a gear assembly operatively positioned between the motor and the lead screw, and an encoder, and

a controller to control the operation of the motor;

wherein the medicament cartridge is insertable through an opening in the housing and into the cartridge receiving area to an inserted position where the plunger is proximate to but spaced from the plunger pusher; and

wherein the controller executes, with the medicament cartridge in the inserted position, a plunger pusher zeroing procedure including causing the motor to advance the plunger pusher to contact the plunger while the seal is sealing the outlet port and then to back the plunger pusher off a predetermined distance from the plunger.

2. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the controller determines from a received signal when the plunger pusher is contacting the plunger during the plunger pusher zeroing procedure.

3. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the received signal is from a pressure deformable part that is in fluid communication with the medicament reservoir.

4. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the received signal is from an occlusion pressure sensor that is in fluid communication with the medicament reservoir.

5. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the received signal is from the encoder.

6. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the controller commences the plunger pusher zeroing procedure after receiving an instruction via a remote control to do so.

7. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the controller automatically starts the plunger pusher zeroing procedure after receiving a signal that the medicament cartridge is in the cartridge receiving area.

8. An apparatus as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the signal is received from a sensor in the housing which senses the near-by presence of a magnet carried by the medicament cartridge.

9. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the motor operates at a controlled torque so that the motor can stall out when contacting the plunger when advancing the plunger pusher to contact the plunger during the plunger pusher zeroing procedure.

10. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the plunger pusher is in a retracted home position out of interference with the medicament cartridge when the medicament cartridge is inserted in through the opening and into the cartridge receiving area.

11. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

a slidable latch attached to the housing and movable between a first position that allows the medicament cartridge to be inserted through the opening and a second position that prevents removal of the medicament cartridge from the inserted position during the plunger pusher zeroing procedure.

12. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the predetermined distance corresponds to between one and twenty microliters worth of dispensed medicament or between 5.5 and 6.5 microliters worth of dispensed medicament.

13. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the predetermined distance is between 0.001 and 0.005 inch.

14. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the controller causes the plunger pusher to be in a retracted home position before the medicament cartridge is inserted into the cartridge receiving area.

15. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the seal is configured to be movable by grasping and pulling on a portion thereof accessible from outside of the housing, after the controller has caused the apparatus to be in a plunger pusher zeroed condition, so that the seal is in a non-sealing position relative to the outlet port.

16. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the controller causes the motor to advance the plunger pusher at a first speed and then at a second slower speed until the plunger pusher contacts the plunger during the plunger pusher zeroing procedure.

17. An apparatus as claimed in claim 16 , wherein the second speed is approximately one half of the first speed.

18. An apparatus as claimed in claim 17 , wherein the first speed is for 0.35-0.45 mm and the second speed is for 0.15-0.25 mm.

19. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the controller determines from input from the encoder when the motor has stalled during the plunger pusher zeroing procedure and to then cause the motor to back the plunger off.

20. An infusion pump apparatus, comprising:

a medicament cartridge including a medicament reservoir, a plunger, an outlet port and a removable seal that seals the outlet port;

an infusion pump assembly including

a housing having an opening and a cartridge receiving area,

a plunger pusher in the housing, and

a drive mechanism that drives the plunger pusher and has a motor, a lead screw, a gear assembly operatively positioned between the motor and the lead screw, and an encoder;

the medicament cartridge and cartridge receiving area being respectively sized and shaped such that the cartridge is insertable through the opening and into the cartridge receiving area, while the removable seal is sealing the outlet port, to an inserted position where the plunger is proximate to but spaced apart from the plunger pusher; and

means for executing a plunger pusher zeroing procedure, while the medicament cartridge is in the inserted position and the removable seal is sealing the outlet port, that causes the motor to advance the plunger pusher that is spaced apart from the plunger into contact with the plunger, that determines that the plunger pusher has contacted the plunger, and in response to a contact determination, that causes the motor to retract the plunger pusher a predetermined distance away from the plunger.

21. An apparatus as claimed in claim 20 , wherein the predetermined distance corresponds to between one and twenty microliters worth of dispensed medicament or between 5.5 and 6.5 microliters worth of dispensed medicament.

22. An apparatus as claimed in claim 20 , wherein the predetermined distance is between 0.001 and 0.005 inch.
