Abstract

Methods and systems for providing multimedia content are disclosed. One method includes applying a container to multimedia content using one or more computing systems, the container defining an interface through which metadata external to the multimedia content is linked with one or more portions of the multimedia content. The method also includes constructing a set of text metadata describing an audio portion of the multimedia content, and generating a set of object metadata describing at least a portion of one or more objects appearing in the multimedia content. The method further includes, upon receiving a request for playback of the multimedia content, providing the text metadata and the object metadata associated with the container for synchronized use during playback of the multimedia content via the container.

Claims (54)

1 . A method for providing multimedia content comprising:

applying a container to multimedia content using one or more computing systems, the container defining an interface through which metadata external to the multimedia content is linked with one or more portions of the multimedia content;

constructing a set of text metadata describing an audio portion of the multimedia content;

generating a set of object metadata describing at least a portion of one or more objects appearing in the multimedia content; and

upon receiving a request for playback of the multimedia content, providing the text metadata and the object metadata associated with the container for synchronized use during playback of the multimedia content via the container.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising converting the multimedia content to a format compatible with the set of metadata.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the multimedia content is converted to a flash video format.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving the multimedia content at the one or more computing systems.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating metadata describing the overall multimedia content.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the metadata describes one or more items associated with multimedia content selected from the group consisting of:

genre;

mood;

title;

producer;

creation date; and

duration.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the object metadata includes information describing objects of interest appearing in a video portion of the multimedia content.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the object metadata describes objects of interest selected from the group consisting of:

individuals appearing in the multimedia content;

products mentioned during playback of the multimedia content; and

words spoken during playback of the multimedia content.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the text metadata and object metadata are related to one or more scenes in the multimedia content.

10 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising, upon receiving a request for playback of the multimedia content, delivering advertisements related to one or more objects defined in the object metadata.

11 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising, upon receipt of a search query including search criteria, providing at least a portion of the metadata associated with a portion of the multimedia content satisfying the search criteria.

12 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising using the text metadata and object metadata to create one or more interactive features synchronized with playback of the multimedia content.

13 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting a message to a provider of the multimedia content notifying the provider that creation of the text metadata and object metadata is completed.

14 . A system for providing multimedia content, the system comprising:

one or more computing systems each including a programmable circuit and a memory, the computing systems communicatively interconnected to execute program instructions, which, when executed, cause the one or more computing systems to:

apply a container to multimedia content using one or more computing systems, the container defining an interface through which metadata external to the multimedia content is linked with one or more portions of the multimedia content;

construct a set of text metadata describing an audio portion of the multimedia content;

generate a set of object metadata describing at least a portion of one or more objects appearing in the multimedia content; and

upon receiving a request for playback of the multimedia content, provide the text metadata and the object metadata associated with the container for synchronized use during playback of the multimedia content via the container.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the object metadata describes objects of interest selected from the group consisting of:

individuals appearing in the multimedia content;

products mentioned during playback of the multimedia content; and

words spoken during playback of the multimedia content.

16 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the text metadata provides a transcript of the multimedia content, and wherein the text data is generated from one or more sources selected from the group consisting of:

closed captioning information;

subtitle information; and

speech to text conversion information.

17 . The system of claim 14 , wherein, upon receiving a request for playback of the multimedia content, the one or more computing systems are configured to provide the container and multimedia content.

18 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more computing systems are further configured to, upon receiving a request for playback of the multimedia content, delivering advertisements related to one or more objects defined in the object metadata.

19 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more computing systems are further configured to use the text metadata and object metadata to create one or more interactive features synchronized with playback of the multimedia content.

20 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more computing systems include a plurality of clustered computing systems configured to share computational tasks.

21 . The system of claim 14 , wherein a first plurality of computing systems constructs the set of text metadata and a second plurality of computing systems constructs the set of object metadata.

22 . The system of claim 21 , wherein the first plurality of computing systems and the second plurality of computing systems execute in parallel.

23 . A method for providing multimedia content comprising:

receiving multimedia content from a source;

applying a container to the multimedia content using one or more computing systems, the container defining an interface through which metadata external to the multimedia content is linked with one or more portions of the multimedia content;

constructing a set of text metadata describing an audio portion of the multimedia content;

generating a set of object metadata describing at least a portion of one or more objects appearing in the multimedia content;

returning the container and multimedia content to the source;

storing the text metadata and object metadata at the one or more computing systems; and

upon notification of a request for playback of the multimedia content at the one or more computing systems, providing the text metadata and the object metadata associated with the container for synchronized use during playback of the multimedia content via the container.
