The fastener system can further comprise a retention matrix comprising a first side facing toward the bases of the fasteners, a second side facing away from the bases of the fasteners, and a plurality of retention members configured to engage the legs. The fastener system can further comprise a cover configured to cover the staple tips, wherein the cover can comprise a sheet of material and/or a plurality of caps.

Claims (60)

1. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a first staple, comprising:

a first base; and

a first leg extending from said first base, the first leg comprising a first tip;

a second staple, comprising:

a second base; and

a second leg extending from said second base, the second leg comprising a second tip; and

a retention matrix, comprising:

a first layer, comprising:

a first side facing toward said first base and said second base;

a second side facing away from said first base and said second base;

a first retention member configured to engage said first leg; and

a second retention member configured to engage said second leg; and

a cover extending along said second side of said first layer, wherein said cover is configured to receive said first tip and said second tip.

2. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said cover comprises a top surface, a bottom surface, and a thickness defined between said top surface and said bottom surface, wherein said bottom surface is penetrable by said first tip and said second tip, and wherein said thickness is configured such that said first tip and said second tip do not extend through said top surface when said retention matrix is engaged with said first staple and said second staple.

3. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said cover comprises a second layer penetrable by said first tip and said second tip and a third layer impenetrable by said first tip and said second tip.

4. The surgical stapling system of claim 3 , wherein said second layer is adhered to said first layer, and wherein said third layer is adhered to said second layer.

5. The surgical stapling system of claim 3 , wherein said first layer is comprised of metal, and wherein said second layer is more flexible than said first layer.

6. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said cover comprises a second layer penetrable by said first tip and said second tip and a third layer comprises a toughness which is greater than said second layer.

7. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a plurality of staples, each staple comprising a base, and a leg extending from said base, wherein each said leg comprises a tip; and

a retention matrix, comprising:

a first side facing toward said bases of said staples;

a second side facing away from said bases of said staples;

a plurality of retention members configured to engage said legs; and

covering means for covering said tips.

8. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a first staple, comprising:

a first base; and

a first leg extending from said first base, the first leg comprising a first tip;

a second staple, comprising:

a second base; and

a second leg extending from said second base, the second leg comprising a second tip; and

a retention matrix, comprising:

a first layer, comprising:

a first side facing toward said first base and said second base;

a second side facing away from said first base and said second base;

a first retention member configured to engage said first leg; and

a second retention member configured to engage said second leg; and

protective means for protecting said first tip and said second tip.

9. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a first staple, comprising:

a first body portion; and

a first tip extending from said first body portion;

a second staple, comprising:

a second body portion; and

a second tip extending from said second body portion; and

a retention matrix, comprising:

a first lamina, comprising:

a first retention member configured to engage said first body portion; and

a second retention member configured to engage said second body portion; and

a second lamina extending over said first lamina, wherein said second lamina is configured to receive said first tip and said second tip.

10. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a first staple, said first staple comprising a first tip;

a second staple, said second staple comprising a second tip;

a retention matrix, comprising:

a layer, comprising:

a first retention member configured to engage said first staple; and

a second retention member configured to engage said second staple; and

a sheath extending over said layer, wherein said sheath is configured to receive said first tip and said second tip.
