Abstract

Embodiments disclosed herein can provide consumers with an effective tool for evaluating the negotiability of prices for vehicles in the marketplace. The tool may include a Price Flexibility Score which measures the elasticity of transaction prices by vehicle model. Specifically, a method may dynamically incorporate factors that affect price variance, convert those factors into variables, generate order statistics for each of the variables, apply a weighting factor to the variables to generate a price flexibility score for each make-model, and determine a negotiability index utilizing the price flexibility score. In one embodiment, the process of determining the negotiability index may be fully driven by a price flexibility model that incorporates a plurality of factors.

Claims (54)

1. A method, comprising:

performing, by a vehicle data system running on one or more server machines:

obtaining data from one or more data sources;

converting the data into a plurality of variables, wherein the data is associated with a plurality of vehicles of a set of vehicle models;

generating order statistics for each of the plurality of variables relative to the set of vehicle models such that each of the set of vehicle models is ranked by each of the plurality of variables;

applying a weighting factor to the plurality of variables based on the order statistics to generate a price flexibility score for each of the set of vehicle models associated with the plurality of vehicles, the price flexibility score measuring an elasticity of a transaction price of a particular vehicle model relative to other vehicle models; and

determining a negotiability index utilizing the price flexibility score for each of the plurality of vehicles, wherein the negotiability index indicates a potential range in purchase prices of the plurality of vehicles.

2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

generating an interface to present the negotiability index to a user on a display.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the data associated with the plurality of vehicles comprises, for each of the set of vehicle models, a predicted price distribution, a listing price distribution, an inventory to sales ratio, and a change associated with the inventory to sales ratio.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the converting further comprises, for each of the set of vehicle models:

normalizing the predicted price distribution and the listing price distribution; and

computing a variance representing a variability in sales price relative to manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP).

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the generating further comprises:

ranking each of the set of vehicle models by each of the plurality of variables.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the determining further comprises:

normalizing the price flexibility score to a value between 0 and 100.

7. A computer program product comprising at least one non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions executable by at least one processor to perform:

obtaining data from one or more data sources;

converting the data into a plurality of variables, wherein the data is associated with a plurality of vehicles of a set of vehicle models;

generating order statistics for each of the plurality of variables relative to the set of vehicle models such that each of the set of vehicle models is ranked by each of the plurality of variables;

applying a weighting factor to the plurality of variables based on the order statistics to generate a price flexibility score for each of the set of vehicle models associated with the plurality of vehicles, the price flexibility score measuring an elasticity of a transaction price of a particular vehicle model relative to other vehicle models; and

determining a negotiability index utilizing the price flexibility score for each of the plurality of vehicles, wherein the negotiability index indicates a potential range in purchase prices of the plurality of vehicles.

8. The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the instructions when executed further cause the at least one processor to perform:

generating an interface to present the negotiability index to a user on a display.

The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the data associated with the plurality of vehicles comprises, for each of the set of vehicle models, a predicted price distribution, a listing price distribution, an inventory to sales ratio, and a change associated with the inventory to sales ratio.

10. The computer program product of claim 9 , wherein the converting further comprises, for each of the set of vehicle models:

normalizing the predicted price distribution and the listing price distribution; and

computing a variance representing a variability in sales price relative to manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP).

11. The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the generating further comprises:

ranking each of the set of vehicle models by each of the plurality of variables.

12. The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the determining further comprises:

normalizing the price flexibility score to a value between 0 and 100.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating the weighting factor by projecting future transaction distributions based on past transaction distributions.

14. The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the instructions when executed further cause the at least one processor to perform:

generating the weighting factor by projecting future transaction distributions based on past transaction distributions.

15. A system, comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions executable by the at least one processor to perform:

obtaining data from one or more data sources;

converting the data into a plurality of variables, wherein the data is associated with a plurality of vehicles of a set of vehicle models;

generating order statistics for each of the plurality of variables relative to the set of vehicle models such that each of the set of vehicle models is ranked by each of the plurality of variables;

applying a weighting factor to the plurality of variables based on the order statistics to generate a price flexibility score for each of the set of vehicle models associated with the plurality of vehicles, the price flexibility score measuring an elasticity of a transaction price of a particular vehicle model relative to other vehicle models; and

determining a negotiability index utilizing the price flexibility score for each of the plurality of vehicles, wherein the negotiability index indicates a potential range in purchase prices of the plurality of vehicles.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the generating further comprises:

ranking each of the set of vehicle models by each of the plurality of variables.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the determining further comprises:

normalizing the price flexibility score to a value between 0 and 100.

18. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

presenting the negotiability index on a client device over the Internet.

19. The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the instructions when executed further cause the at least one processor to perform:

presenting the negotiability index on a client device over the Internet.

20. The system of claim 15 , wherein the instructions when executed further cause the at least one processor to perform:

presenting the negotiability index on a client device over the Internet.
