Abstract

Disclosed herein are devices and methods for introducing a plurality of instruments to a target site through a working channel. The working channel can include a surface adapted to guide one or more instruments into select positions. The working channel can be defined by a portion of a guide tube or tip that may be coupled with an endoscope.

Claims (29)

1. A system for introducing a plurality of instruments to a target site, the system comprising:

an elongate tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one channel extending therebetween for delivering the plurality of instruments; and

a tip at the distal end of the tube, the tip including a lumen configured to allow the passage of the plurality of instruments, the tip comprising an inner surface having a first area for receiving a first instrument, a second area for receiving a second instrument, and an instrument directing surface configured to guide the first instrument into the first area and to limit ingress of the first instrument into the second area,

wherein the first area and the second area are in communication with the lumen, and the elongate tube is configured such that the first instrument when positioned and maintained in the first area simultaneously guides the second instrument into the second area, wherein the instrument directing surface of the tip is movable relative to other internal surfaces of the tip.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tube comprises only one channel.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tip is detachable from the tube.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tip directs the first and second instruments away from one another.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tip is transparent.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instrument directing surface of the tip is tapered from a proximal direction to a distal direction.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the respective positions of the first and second instruments within the tip are dependent on the order in which the first and second instruments are passed into the tip.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instrument directing surface of the tip is at least one of compressible, bendable, and deformable, and changes shape to permit access to the second area.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the directing surface is configured to position the first instrument in the first area and position the second instrument in the second area.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the directing surface is configured to block the first instrument from entering second area.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the directing surface is a ramp that is configured to be selectively compressed.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first area and the second area are parallel.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first instrument, when in the first area, forces the second instrument to encounter the directing surface.

14. A system for introducing a plurality of instruments to a target site, the system comprising:

an elongate tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a single channel extending therebetween for delivering the plurality of instruments; and

a tip at the distal end of the tube, the tip including a lumen configured to allow the passage of the plurality of instruments, the tip comprising an inner surface having a first area for receiving a first instrument, a second area for receiving a second instrument, and an instrument directing surface configured to guide the first instrument into the first area and to limit ingress of the first instrument into the second area,

wherein the directing surface is configured to change shape to permit the ingress of the second instrument into the second area, and

wherein the first area and the second area are in communication with the lumen, and the elongate tube is configured such that the first instrument when positioned and maintained in the first area simultaneously guides the second instrument into the second area, wherein the instrument directing surface of the tip is movable relative to other internal surfaces of the tip.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the first area and the second area are parallel.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the respective positions of the first and second instruments within the tip are dependent on the order in which the first and second instruments are passed into the tip.

17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the instrument directing surface of the tip is at least one of compressible, bendable, and deformable.

18. The system of claim 14 , wherein the directing surface is a ramp that is configured to be selectively compressed.

19. A system for introducing a plurality of instruments to a target site, the system comprising:

an elongate tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one channel extending therebetween for delivering the plurality of instruments; and

a tip at the distal end of the tube, the tip including a lumen configured to allow the passage of the plurality of instruments, the tip comprising an inner surface having a first area for receiving a first instrument, a second area for receiving a second instrument, and an instrument directing surface configured to guide the first instrument into the first area and to limit ingress of the first instrument into the second area,

wherein the first area and the second area are parallel and in communication with the lumen, and the elongate tube is configured such that sequential passage of the first and second instruments through the tip results in positioning of the second instrument into the second area, wherein the instrument directing surface of the tip is movable relative to other internal surfaces of the tip.
