Abstract

A method and apparatus for a shock absorber having a damping fluid compensation chamber with a gas charge. In one aspect, a partition separates a first chamber portion from a second chamber portion, wherein the first portion of the chamber is at a first initial gas pressure and the second portion of the chamber is at a second initial pressure. A valve separates the first and second chamber portions and opening the valve commingles the first and second chamber portions so that the combined chamber portions are at a third pressure. In another aspect, a piston disposed through a wall is in pressure communication with the gas charge and is biased inwardly toward a pressure of the charge, whereby an indicator is movable by the piston in response to the pressure.

Claims (26)

1. A damper for use with a suspension system, the damper comprising:

a fluid-filled chamber for receiving a piston and rod;

a reservoir in fluid communication with the chamber, the reservoir having a fluid portion and a compressed gas portion;

a pre-charge portion separated from the compressed gas portion by a partition; and

a valve for selectively communicating a predetermined pressure of a volume of gas in the pre-charge portion with a volume of the compressed gas portion, the valve having a closed position preventing communication between the compressed gas portion and the precharge portion, regardless of the pressure differential therebetween, wherein the valve includes at least one fluid path through the partition and wherein the fluid path is disposed between the portions by rotating the valve to transmit axial motion thereof.

2. The damper of claim 1 , wherein upon communication between the portions, both portions act together as a single compressed gas portion with a single pressure therein.

3. The damper of claim 1 , wherein the valve is also a fill valve.

4. The damper of claim 1 , wherein the reservoir is housed in a separate chamber.

5. The damper of claim 1 , wherein the reservoir is integrally formed within the fluid-filled chamber.

6. The damper of claim 1 , wherein prior to communication between the portions, the pre-charge portion contains gas at a first pressure and the compressed gas portion contains gas at a second, lower pressure.

7. The damper of claim 6 , wherein the second lower pressure is atmospheric pressure.

8. The damper of claim 7 , wherein after communication between the portions, both portions contain gas at a third pressure, the third pressure lesser than the first pressure and greater than the second pressure.

9. The damper of claim 1 , further including a gas pressure indicator assembly, the assembly constructed and arranged to indicate the presence of a communicated pressure in the compressed gas portion of the reservoir, the indicator including a shaft having a piston surface at a first end in communication with the gas portion and an indicator at an opposite end visible to a user when the piston surface is depressed due to gas pressure in the compressed gas portion, the shaft extending through the pre-charged portion.

10. A method for installing a suspension component comprising:

filling a pre-charge portion of a damper with gas to a first gas pressure prior to installation of the damper in a vehicle;

compressing the damper to fit within a vehicle installation parameter;

connecting a first end of the damper to the vehicle;

connecting a second end of the damper to the vehicle;

operating a valve member on the damper by moving the member axially in a valve housing; and

communicating the first gas pressure with a second pressure within the damper, thereby equalizing a previously separated compensation chamber at a third pressure.

11. The damper of claim 1 further including:

a second piston in fluid communication with the pre-charged portion, whereby the second piston is displaceable when the gas is at a first pressure; and

an indicator associated with the piston, the indicator indicating the first pressure.

12. The damper of claim 1 , further including:

a second piston in fluid communication with the compressed gas portion, whereby the second piston is displaceable when the gas is at a first pressure; and

an indicator associated with the second piston, the indicator indicating the first pressure.
