Abstract

An illumination system for variable direction of view instruments is disclosed generally comprising an endoscope having a longitudinal axis and a variable view vector that pivots about a pivot axis angularly offset from the longitudinal axis. The view vector has an attendant viewing field that travels along a path as the view vector pivots, defining a viewing range. A source of illumination is arranged in a plane offset from the plane in which the view vector pivots and provides an annular, solid angle of illumination that covers the viewing range. In certain embodiments, the pivot axis is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and the illumination plane is parallel to the pivot plane. In some embodiments, the source of illumination is a plurality of light emitting diodes arranged around the pivot axis.

Claims (15)

1. An endoscope, comprising:

a shaft having a longitudinal axis extending between a proximal end portion and a distal end portion of the shaft;

a viewing element disposed at the distal end portion of the shaft, the viewing element pivotable about a pivot axis substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the viewing element having a view vector pivotable about the pivot axis in a scan plane, the view vector having a viewing field, defined as the field of view of the viewing element at a given pivot position, that moves along a viewing range, defined as the path of the viewing field as the view vector pivots about the pivot axis through its entire range, such that the viewing field is a subset of the viewing range; and

a plurality of illumination elements disposed relative to a housing at the distal end portion of the shaft, the illumination elements arranged in a first illumination element plane offset from, but substantially parallel to, the scan plane such that a blended illumination field provided by illumination from the illumination elements provides substantially complete illumination of the entire viewing range when all of the plurality of illumination elements are activated, and defining thereby the illumination field,

wherein each illumination element consists of one or more light emitting diodes, and the illumination elements are organized as a set of sub-arrays, each sub-array comprising at least one illumination element, wherein each sub-array may be selectively activated, and wherein each illumination element sub-array is automatically deactivated when the viewing field of the viewing element and the illumination contribution of the sub array do not overlap, and wherein the illuminated view field is a subset, smaller than the entire illumination field.

2. The endo scope of claim 1 , wherein the illumination elements are arranged such that an individual illumination field of each illumination element overlaps with an individual illumination field of an adjacent illumination element; and

wherein the respective individual illumination fields of the illumination elements collectively form the blended illuminated view field.

3. The endo scope of claim 2 , wherein the illumination elements are arranged relative to one another such that the blended illuminated view field is a uniformly blended illuminated view field.

4. The endoscope of claim 1 , wherein the housing includes a spherical viewing window.

5. The endoscope of claim 1 , wherein the viewing element includes a right-angled prism.

6. The endoscope of claim 1 further comprising a second plurality of illumination elements disposed in a second illumination plane offset from, but substantially parallel to, both the scan plane and the first illumination element plane.

7. The endoscope of claim 1 wherein each illumination element comprises a plurality of light emitting diodes.

8. The endoscope of claim 1 wherein illumination elements comprise light emitting diodes capable of multispectral illumination.

9. The endoscope of claim 7 wherein each sub-array of illumination elements is capable of multispectral illumination.

10. The endoscope of claim 7 wherein said light emitting diodes are overdrive capable such that the illumination elements can produce high intensity flashes.
