Abstract

A separator for a lead acid battery is a porous membrane having a positive electrode face and a negative electrode face. A plurality of longitudinally extending ribs, a plurality of protrusions or a nonwoven material may be disposed upon the positive electrode face. A plurality of transversely extending ribs are disposed upon the negative electrode face. The transverse ribs disposed upon the negative electrode face are preferably juxtaposed to a negative electrode of the lead acid battery, when the separator is placed within that battery.

Claims (16)

1. A separator for a lead acid battery comprising:

a polyethylene microporous membrane having a first face and a second face;

a plurality of longitudinally extending ribs formed integrally from the polyethylene microporous membrane and being disposed upon said first face;

a plurality of transversely extending ribs formed integrally from the polyethylene microporous membrane being disposed upon said second face,

wherein the longitudinally extending ribs and transversely extending ribs are perpendicular to each other;

wherein the transversely extending ribs are discontinuous and include fissures opposite the longitudinally extending ribs.

2. The separator according to claim 1 , wherein the transversely extending ribs are rounded in cross-section.

3. The battery separator according to claim 1 , wherein the transversely extending ribs are straight.

4. The separator according to claim 1 , wherein the transversely extending ribs are between 0.02-0.30 mm high.

5. The separator according to claim 1 , wherein overall thickness of the separator is between 0.200 to 4.0 mm.

6. The battery separator according to claim 1 , wherein the separator has a bending stiffness of at least 20 mN.

7. The battery separator according to claim 1 , wherein the separator comprises ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene and silica.

8. The separator according to claim 1 , wherein the transversely extending ribs are more closely spaced than the longitudinally extending ribs.

9. The separator according to claim 1 , wherein the height of the longitudinally extending ribs is higher than the height of the transversely extending ribs.

10. The separator according to claim 1 , wherein the height of the longitudinally extending ribs is higher than the height of the transversely extending ribs, and the transversely extending ribs are more closely spaced than the longitudinally extending ribs.

11. A lead acid battery comprising the separator of claim 1 .
