Abstract

A surgical rod scorer is provided. The surgical rod scorer includes a handle having an elongated shaft extending therefrom defining a longitudinal axis therethrough. A knob supported on a proximal end of the handle is movable about the longitudinal axis. A reciprocating member is operably disposed and translatable within the handle and the shaft of the surgical rod scorer. A drive member operably coupled to the proximal end of the reciprocating member and to the knob is configured to translate the reciprocating member along the longitudinal axis. The shaft and the reciprocating member including a respective distal end and operable head configured to support one or more cutting elements thereon. The reciprocating member including the one or more cutting elements supported thereon is translatable from a retracted position, to an extended position for scoring surgical rod.

Claims (24)

1. A method for cutting surgical rod, comprising:

placing a surgical rod scorer including a shaft including an operable head and a reciprocating member about the surgical rod;

rotating a knob operably coupled to the reciprocating member to axially translate a driver member disposed within a handle of the surgical rod scorer and operably coupled to the reciprocating member to move the reciprocating member from a retracted position spaced apart from the operable head of the shaft to an extended position to bring a plurality of cutting elements mounted on the reciprocating member and the operable head into opposing contact with the rod for scoring the surgical rod, the handle including a first guide member extending from an inner surface of a first portion of the handle, the first guide member positioned within a corresponding slot of the reciprocating member to guide the reciprocating member as the reciprocating member is moved from the retracted to the extended position, the knob including an annular flange that is positioned on an elongated shaft of the knob to fix the knob in a set orientation, wherein the annular flange is positioned between a proximal end of the reciprocating member and a proximal end of the handle;

compressing the plurality of cutting elements against the surgical rod;

oscillating the surgical rod scorer about the surgical rod;

opening the surgical rod scorer;

removing the surgical rod; and

breaking the rod.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein placing the surgical rod scorer about the surgical rod includes inserting the surgical rod through an opening between the reciprocating member and the operable head of a shaft of the surgical rod scorer with the reciprocating member in the retracted position.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein of placing the surgical rod scorer about the surgical rod includes inserting the surgical rod through an opening between the reciprocating member and the operable head of a shaft of the surgical rod scorer.

The method of claim 1 , wherein rotating the knob includes providing the first guide member with an aperture which aligns with a threaded portion provided on a second guide member extending from an inner surface of a second portion of the handle, the aperture and threaded portion configured to receive a corresponding screw for connecting the first and second portions together.

5. The method of claim 1 , further including providing the annular flange with a diameter that is greater than a diameter of the openings of each of the proximal ends of the reciprocating member and the handle.

6. A method for cutting surgical rod, comprising:

placing the surgical rod scorer about a surgical rod;

rotating a knob operably coupled to a reciprocating member such that the reciprocating member translates from a retracted position spaced apart from an operable head of a shaft to an extended position to bring a plurality of cutting elements into contact with the rod for scoring the surgical rod, wherein the knob is fixed in a set orientation with the use of an annular flange provided on an elongated shaft of the knob, the annular flange positioned between a proximal end of the reciprocating member and a proximal end of a handle of the surgical rod scorer, the handle including first guide member extending from an inner surface of a first portion of the handle, the first guide member positioned within a corresponding slot of the reciprocating member to guide the reciprocating member as the reciprocating member is moved from the retracted position to the extended position;

rotating the knob to further translate the reciprocating member toward the operable head of the shaft to compress the plurality of cutting elements against the surgical rod;

oscillating the surgical rod scorer about the surgical rod;

opening the surgical rod scorer;

removing the surgical rod; and

breaking the rod.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein of placing the surgical rod scorer about the surgical rod includes inserting the surgical rod through an opening between the reciprocating member and the operable head of a shaft of the surgical rod scorer with the reciprocating member in the retracted position.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein of placing the surgical rod scorer about the surgical rod includes inserting the surgical rod through an opening between the reciprocating member and the operable head of a shaft of the surgical rod scorer.

The method of claim 6 , wherein rotating the knob includes providing the first guide member with an aperture which aligns with a threaded portion provided on a second guide member extending from an inner surface of a second portion of the handle, the aperture and threaded portion configured to receive a corresponding screw for connecting the first and second portions together.

10. The method of claim 6 , further including providing the annular flange with a diameter that is greater than a diameter of the openings of each of the proximal ends of the reciprocating member and the handle.
