Abstract

According to certain described aspects, multiple acoustic sensing elements are employed in a variety of beneficial ways to provide improved physiological monitoring, among other advantages. In various embodiments, sensing elements can be advantageously employed in a single sensor package, in multiple sensor packages, and at a variety of other strategic locations in the monitoring environment. According to other aspects, to compensate for skin elasticity and attachment variability, an acoustic sensor support is provided that includes one or more pressure equalization pathways. The pathways can provide an air-flow channel from the cavity defined by the sensing elements and frame to the ambient air pressure.

Claims (26)

1. An acoustic sensor configured to non-invasively detect acoustic vibrations associated with a medical patient, said acoustic vibrations indicative of one or more physiological parameters of the medical patient, said acoustic sensor comprising:

at least one sound-sensing membrane configured to detect acoustic vibrations associated with a medical patient when the acoustic sensor is attached to the medical patient; and

a sensor support defining an acoustic cavity and configured to support the at least one sensing membrane over the acoustic cavity, the acoustic cavity defined on a patient side of the sensor support by a first surface of the sensor support and by one or more side walls of the sensor support extending from the first surface and along a periphery of the acoustic cavity, the sensor support comprising multiple pressure equalization pathways formed in the one or more walls of the sensor support, at least two of the pressure equalization pathways formed in respective ones of the one or more walls that are positioned on opposite sides of the sensor support, the multiple pressure equalization pathways extending from the acoustic cavity to ambient air pressure.

2. The acoustic sensor of claim 1 , wherein said multiple pressure equalization pathways comprise at least one notch.

3. The acoustic sensor of claim 1 , wherein said multiple pressure equalization pathways comprise at least one hole.

4. The acoustic sensor of claim 1 , wherein the sensor support comprises equal numbers of pressure equalization pathways on opposite sides of the sensor support.

5. The acoustic sensor of claim 4 , wherein the sensor support comprises three pressure equalization pathways on opposite sides of the sensor support.

6. The acoustic sensor of claim 1 , wherein the sensor support comprises at least two pressure equalization pathways that are symmetrically positioned on the sensor support.

7. The acoustic sensor of claim 1 , wherein the pressure equalization pathways do not contact the at least one sound-sensing membrane.

8. The acoustic sensor of claim 1 , wherein said at least one sound-sensing membrane comprises at least two sound-sensing membranes.

9. The acoustic sensor of claim 8 , further comprising at least one spacer positioned between said at least two sound-sensing membranes.

10. The acoustic sensor of claim 9 , wherein said spacer defines an air gap between said sound-sensing membranes.

11. The acoustic sensor of claim 9 , wherein said spacer comprises a dielectric layer.

12. The acoustic sensor of claim 1 , wherein said at least one sound-sensing membrane comprises a piezoelectric film.

13. An acoustic sensor configured to non-invasively detect acoustic vibrations associated with a medical patient, said acoustic vibrations indicative of one or more physiological parameters of the medical patient, said acoustic sensor comprising:

at least one piezoelectric membrane configured to detect acoustic vibrations associated with a medical patient when the acoustic sensor is attached to the medical patient; and

a sensor support configured to support the at least one piezoelectric membrane against the medical patient's skin, wherein the sensor is configured to provide an electrical signal in response to acoustic vibrations detected by the at least one piezoelectric membrane substantially independent of a force used to attach the sensor to the medical patient's skin.

14. The acoustic sensor of claim 13 , further comprising at least one pressure equalization pathway extending from an interior cavity defined by the piezoelectric membrane and sensor support to ambient air pressure.

15. The acoustic sensor of claim 14 , wherein the pressure equalization pathway comprises a notch formed in the sensor support's wall.

16. The acoustic sensor of claim 14 , wherein the at least one pressure equalization pathway comprises at least one notch formed in each of two opposite sensor support walls.

17. An acoustic sensor configured to non-invasively detect acoustic vibrations associated with a medical patient, said acoustic vibrations indicative of one or more physiological parameters of the medical patient, said acoustic sensor comprising:

at least one piezoelectric membrane configured to detect acoustic vibrations associated with a medical patient when the acoustic sensor is attached to the medical patient; and

a sensor support configured to support the at least one piezoelectric membrane against the medical patient's skin, wherein the sensor is configured to provide an electrical signal in response to acoustic vibrations detected by the at least one piezoelectric membrane substantially independent of an elasticity of the medical patient's skin.

18. The acoustic sensor of claim 17 , further comprising at least one pressure equalization pathway extending from an interior cavity defined by the piezoelectric membrane and sensor support to ambient air pressure.

19. The acoustic sensor of claim 18 , wherein the pressure equalization pathway comprises a notch formed in the sensor support's wall.

20. The acoustic sensor of claim 18 , wherein the at least one pressure equalization pathway comprises at least one notch formed in each of two opposite sensor support walls.
