Abstract

Systems and methods for managing cached content are disclosed. More particularly, embodiments disclosed herein may allow cached content to be updated (e.g. regenerated or replaced) in response to a notification. Specifically, embodiments disclosed herein may process a notification pertaining to content stored in a cache. Processing the notification may include locating cached content associated with the notification. After the cached content which corresponds to the notification is found, an appropriate action may be taken. For example, the cached content may be flushed from the cache or a request may be regenerated. As a result of the action, new content is generated. This new content is then used to replace or update the cached content.

Claims (35)

1. A method for cache management, comprising:

determining that content in a data store has been newly added or updated, wherein determining that content in the data store has been newly added or updated comprises receiving a notification at a web server computer having access to a web server cache containing previously generated web content, the notification comprising a generated event associated with newly added or updated content stored in a data store coupled to the web server computer and separate from the web server cache, wherein the generated event comprises values associated with a set of criteria; and

automatically updating content in the web server cache without waiting for a request from a client, wherein automatically updating content in the web server cache comprises:

locating, by a cache manager, cached content stored in the web server cache associated with the notification, wherein the locating comprises comparing the values associated with the set of criteria with metadata stored in the web server cache in association with the cached content;

after the cached content which corresponds to the notification is found, updating the cached content utilizing the metadata stored in the web server cache in association with the cached content, wherein updating the cached content comprises generating new web content from the newly added or updated content in the data store; and

storing the new web content in the web server cache to replace the cached content, wherein a response to a subsequent request for the cached content contains the new cached content.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein updating the cached content includes flushing the cached content from the web server cache.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein updating the cached content includes regenerating a request for content, wherein regenerating comprises invoking a component to generate the new cached content.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the component comprises a rule, wherein the web server is configured to select content from the data store based on the values associated with the set of criteria according to the rule.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the notification is issued by an application manager.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the cache manager regenerates a request which caused an application server to generate the cached content.

7. A computer program product comprising at least one non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions translatable by at least one processor in a web server computer to perform:

determining that content in a data store has been newly added or updated, wherein determining that content in the data store has been newly added or updated comprises receiving a notification at a web server computer having access to a web server cache containing previously generated web content, the notification comprising a generated event associated with newly added or updated content stored in a data store coupled to the web server computer and separate from the web server cache, wherein the generated event comprises values associated with a set of criteria; and

automatically updating content in the web server cache without waiting for a request from a client, wherein automatically updating content in the web server cache comprises:

locating, by a cache manager, cached content stored in the web server cache associated with the notification, wherein the locating comprises comparing the values associated with the set of criteria with metadata stored in the web server cache in association with the cached content;

after the cached content which corresponds to the notification is found, updating the cached content utilizing the metadata stored in the web server cache in association with the cached content, wherein updating the cached content comprises generating new web content from the newly added or updated content in the data store; and

storing the new web content in the cache to replace the cached content, wherein a response to a subsequent request for the cached content contains the new cached content.

8. The computer program product according to claim 7 , wherein updating the cached content includes flushing the cached content from the web server cache.

9. The computer program product according to claim 7 , wherein updating the cached content includes regenerating a request for content, wherein regenerating comprises invoking a component to generate the new content.

10. The computer program product according to claim 9 , wherein the component comprises a rule, wherein the web server is configured to select content from the data store based on the values associated with the set of criteria according to the rule.

11. The computer program product according to claim 7 , wherein the notification is issued by an application manager.

12. The computer program product according to claim 11 , wherein the cache manager regenerates a request which caused an application server to generate the cached content.

13. A system for cache management, comprising:

a web server computer having at least one processor; and

at least one non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions translatable by the at least one processor to perform:

determining that content in a data store has been newly added or updated, wherein determining that content in the data store has been newly added or updated comprises receiving a notification at a web server computer having access to a web server cache containing previously generated web content, the notification comprising a generated event associated with newly added or updated content stored in a data store coupled to the web server computer and separate from the web server cache, wherein the generated event comprises values associated with a set of criteria; and

automatically updating content in the web server cache without waiting for a request from a client, wherein automatically updating content in the cache comprises:

locating, by a cache manager, cached content stored in the web server cache associated with the notification, wherein the locating comprises comparing the values associated with the set of criteria with metadata stored in the web server cache in association with the cached content;

after the cached content which corresponds to the notification is found, updating the cached content utilizing the metadata stored in the web server cache in association with the cached content, wherein updating the cached content comprises generating new web content from the newly added or updated content in the data store; and

storing the new content in the web server cache to replace the cached content, wherein a response to a subsequent request for the cached content contains the new cached content.

14. The system according to claim 13 , wherein updating the cached content includes flushing the cached content from the web server cache.

15. The system according to claim 13 , wherein updating the cached content includes regenerating a request for content, wherein regenerating comprises invoking a component to generate the new content.

16. The system according to claim 15 , wherein the component comprises a rule, wherein the web server is configured to select content from the data store based on the values associated with the set of criteria according to the rule.

17. The system according to claim 13 , wherein the notification is issued by an application manager.

18. The system according to claim 17 , wherein the cache manager regenerates a request which caused an application server to generate the cached content.
