Abstract

An optical assembly includes a first transparent substrate having first and second surfaces, a second transparent substrate having substantially parallel third and fourth surfaces, a reflective portion on the second transparent substrate, a plurality of filters between the first substrate and the reflective portion, the plurality of filters filtering light beams incident thereon, the plurality of filters and the reflective portion forming a bounce cavity within the second transparent substrate, a collimating lens for collimating light beams to be input to the bounce cavity, a tilt mechanism for introducing tilt to light beams input to the bounce cavity; an input port receiving light beams and an output port transmitting light beams. The tilt mechanism may be between the first and second substrate.

Claims (41)

1. An optical assembly, comprising:

a transparent substrate having substantially parallel first and second surfaces;

a reflective portion on the transparent substrate;

a plurality of filters filtering light beams incident thereon, the plurality of filters and the reflective portion forming a bounce cavity within the transparent substrate;

an alignment mechanism accurately aligning the plurality of filters to a predetermined angle relative to the reflective portion;

a tilt mechanism for introducing tilt to the light beams input to the bounce cavity;

an input port adapted to receive light having a plurality of wavelengths; and

a plurality of detectors adapted to receive a corresponding wavelength of the light received at the input port and incident on the bounce cavity.

2. The optical assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the input port is a fiber port.

3. The optical assembly as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a collimating lens for collimating light beams to be input to the bounce cavity.

4. The optical assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the collimating lens is a diffractive.

5. The optical assembly as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a focusing lens array for focusing light from the bounce cavity onto respective detectors.

6. The optical assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the alignment mechanism is between each filter and a mount surface for the plurality of filters, the alignment mechanism being in contact with each filter at only a few locations.

7. The optical assembly as claimed in claim 6 , further comprising a bonding material between the alignment mechanism and each filter.

8. The optical assembly as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the bonding material only contacts each filter at the few locations where each filter contacts the alignment mechanism.

9. The optical assembly as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

a second transparent substrate having substantially parallel third and fourth surfaces, the third surface being opposite the second surface, wherein the mount surface is one of the second and third surfaces.

10. An optical assembly, comprising:

a transparent substrate having substantially parallel first and second surfaces;

a reflective portion on the transparent substrate;

a plurality of filters filtering light beams incident thereon, the plurality of filters and the reflective portion forming a bounce cavity within the transparent substrate;

an alignment mechanism accurately aligning the plurality of filters to a predetermined angle relative to the reflective portion;

a tilt mechanism for introducing tilt to the light beams input to the bounce cavity;

a plurality of light sources outputting light at respective different wavelengths to the bounce cavity; and

an output port adapted to receive light having the plurality of wavelengths.

11. The optical assembly as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the output port is a fiber port.

12. The optical assembly as claimed in claim 10 , further comprising an array of collimating lenses for collimating light beams from the light sources to be input to the bounce cavity.

13. The optical assembly as claimed in claim 12 , further comprising an array of diffractive elements between the array of collimating lenses and the bounce cavity.

14. The optical assembly as claimed in claim 10 , further comprising a focusing lens focusing the light having the plurality of wavelengths.

17. The optical assembly as claimed in claim 16 , further comprising a bonding material between the alignment mechanism and each filter.

18. The optical assembly as claimed in claim 17 , wherein the bonding material only contacts each filter at the few locations where each filter contacts the alignment mechanism.

19. The optical assembly as claimed in claim 10 , further comprising:

a second transparent substrate having substantially parallel third and fourth surfaces, the third surface being opposite the second surface, wherein the mount surface is one of the second and third surfaces.

20. An optical assembly, comprising:

a transparent substrate having substantially parallel first and second surfaces;

a reflective portion on the transparent substrate;

a plurality of filters filtering light beams incident thereon, the plurality of filters and the reflective portion forming a bounce cavity within the transparent substrate, the plurality of filters being integrated directly onto one of the first and second surfaces of the transparent substrate; and
