Abstract

Devices and methods for RF heating of food, using techniques which allow uniformity and/or controlled non-uniformity.

Claims (23)

1. An apparatus for heating an object by delivering microwave energy to the object, comprising:

an interface configured to receive processing information using information stored on a machine readable element associated with the object;

a device configured to detect microwave radiation absorption characteristics of the object at a plurality of frequencies;

at least one radiating element; and

at least one processor configured to:

determine at least one instruction for heating the object by microwave radiation based on the processing information and the microwave radiation absorption characteristics of the object; and

cause a source of microwave energy to heat the object by applying microwave radiation to the object in accordance with the at least one instruction;

wherein the at least one radiating element is configured to obtain first information relating to the microwave radiation absorption characteristics of the object at the plurality of frequencies and provide the first information to the device, and wherein the at least one radiating element is configured to serve as part of a reading unit by receiving the information stored on the machine readable element.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , comprising:

a cavity; and

the source of microwave energy configured to provide microwave energy to the cavity to heat the object using microwave radiation.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one instruction specifies a driving profile for microwave energy delivery such that microwave energy is delivered to the object at two or more of the plurality of frequencies, and for each of the two or more frequencies the driving profile identifies a power and an amount of time for delivering microwave energy by microwave radiation.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the interface is configured to receive information acquired by a user input device, and the at least one processor is configured to determine the at least one instruction for heating the object based on the information acquired by the user input device.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , comprising at least one positioning element configured to position the object at a predetermined orientation with respect to the reading unit.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the microwave radiation absorption characteristics include an absorption rate relating to microwave energy absorbed by the object at each of the plurality of frequencies, and wherein the at least one processor is configured to determine the at least one instruction for heating the object by microwave radiation based on the absorption rate.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the interface is configured to receive information acquired by a user interface device, and the at least one processor is configured to determine the at least one instruction for heating the object based on the information acquired by the user interface device.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to provide one or more prompts to a user through the user interface device based on the processing information received using information stored on the machine readable element.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to detect the microwave radiation absorption characteristics of the object periodically during the heating of the object, and wherein the at least one processor is configured to determine the at least one instruction for heating the object based on the periodically detected microwave radiation absorption characteristics of the object.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to detect the microwave radiation absorption characteristics of the object based on detection of at least one of a group consisting of: reflection coefficients, transfer coefficients, reflected power to a first feed, coupled power to at least a second feed, an efficiency of energy transfer into the object, a dielectric constant of the object, and an amount of energy absorbed by the object.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to detect the microwave radiation absorption characteristics of the object based on microwave radiation received by the object.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the interface is configured to receive the processing information from the reading unit configured to read information from the machine readable element.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the microwave radiation has a frequency range between 300 MHz and 3 GHz.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the microwave radiation has a frequency range between 400 MHz and 1 GHz.
