Abstract

Apparatuses and methods to cut a control line and/or to run a control line on a rig may include a movable cutting apparatus to cut a control line, a load transfer member to engage a control line, a load measuring device to measure a load imparted to a load transfer member, and a drive member to engage and drive a control line. The apparatuses and methods may be used with a control line positioning apparatus, a pipe engaging apparatus, and/or may be used by themselves.

Claims (101)

1. An apparatus to cut a control line, comprising:

a movable cutting apparatus having a cutting member attached thereto; and

a pipe engaging apparatus configured to engage a tubular member and configured to receive and direct the control line through a control line pathway of the pipe engaging apparatus,

a back-up member configured to engage the control line;

wherein the back-up member is disposed adjacent to the cutting member;

wherein the movable cutting apparatus is configured to move the cutting member between a retracted position and a deployed position;

wherein the cutting member of the movable cutting apparatus is configured to engage and cut the control line in the deployed position of the cutting member; and

wherein the movable cutting apparatus is disposed adjacent to the control line pathway such that the cutting member of the movable cutting apparatus is configured to engage and cut the control line in the control line pathway in the deployed position of the cutting member.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a control line positioning apparatus configured to receive and direct the control line through a control line pathway of the control line positioning apparatus;

wherein the movable cutting apparatus is disposed adjacent to the control line pathway such that the cutting member of the movable cutting apparatus is configured to engage and cut the control line in the control line pathway in the deployed position of the cutting member.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the movable cutting apparatus comprises a pivotable cutting apparatus configured to pivot the cutting member between the retracted position and the deployed position of the cutting member.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the back-up member is configured to pivot when engaged with the control line.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the movable cutting apparatus comprises a retainer configured to engage the movable cutting apparatus in the retracted position of the cutting member and configured to disengage the movable cutting apparatus, thereby enabling the cutting member to move to the deployed position.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein an actuator is coupled to the retainer such that the retainer is configured to move between engagement with the movable cutting apparatus and disengagement with the movable cutting apparatus.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the actuator comprises a rod and a cylinder configured to move the retainer.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor coupled to the movable cutting apparatus, wherein the sensor is configured to detect a position of the cutting member.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , further comprising a controller coupled to the sensor, wherein the controller is configured to receive a signal from the sensor based upon the position of the cutting member.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cutting member comprises a cutting blade and a contacting surface.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the contacting surface of the cutting member is configured to engage the control line, and wherein the cutting blade of the cutting member is configured to cut the control line in the deployed position of the cutting member.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the contacting surface is configured to engage the control line and move the cutting member to the deployed position to cut the control line.

13. A method to cut a control line, comprising:

providing a movable cutting apparatus having a cutting member attached thereto and disposed adjacent to the control line;

moving the cutting member from a retracted position to a deployed position;

cutting the control line with the cutting member of the movable cutting apparatus in the deployed position;

receiving the control line with a pipe engaging apparatus; and

directing the control line through a control line pathway of the pipe engaging apparatus,

engaging the control line with a back-up member, wherein the back-up member is disposed adjacent to the cutting member.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

receiving the control line with a control line positioning apparatus; and

directing the control line through a control line pathway of the control line positioning apparatus.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the movable cutting apparatus comprises a pivotable cutting apparatus, wherein the moving the cutting member from the retracted position to the deployed position comprises pivoting the cutting member from the retracted position to the deployed position.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the movable cutting apparatus comprises a retainer, the method further comprising:

engaging the movable cutting apparatus with the retainer in the retracted position of the cutting member; and

disengaging the movable cutting apparatus with the retainer in the deployed position of the cutting member.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the movable cutting apparatus comprises an actuator coupled to the retainer, wherein the actuator is configured to move the retainer between engagement with the movable cutting apparatus and disengagement with the movable cutting apparatus.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein a sensor is coupled to the movable cutting apparatus, wherein the sensor is configured to detect a position of the cutting member.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein a controller is coupled to the sensor, wherein the controller is configured to receive a signal from the sensor based upon the position of the cutting member.

20. The method of claim 13 , wherein the cutting member comprises a cutting blade and a contacting surface, the method further comprising:

engaging the control line with the contacting surface of the cutting member; and

cutting the control line with the cutting blade of the cutting member.

21. The method of claim 20 , further comprising:

moving the control line with the contacting surface of the cutting member engaged thereto such that the cutting blade of the cutting member cuts the control line.

22. The method of claim 20 , wherein the contacting surface is configured to engage the control line and move the cutting member to the deployed position to cut the control line.

23. An apparatus to run a control line on a rig, comprising:

a control line pathway configured to feed the control line through the rig;

a load transfer member disposed adjacent to the control line pathway and configured to engage the control line in the control line pathway; and

a load measuring device coupled to the load transfer member and configured to measure a load imparted to the load transfer member by the control line,

wherein the control line pathway is disposed within at least one of a control line positioning apparatus and a pipe engaging apparatus.

24. A method to run a control line on a rig, comprising:

feeding the control line through a control line pathway through the rig;

engaging the control line in the control line pathway with a load transfer member; and

measuring a load imparted to the load transfer member by the control line with a load measuring device coupled to the load transfer member,

wherein the control line pathway is disposed within at least one of a control line positioning apparatus and a pipe engaging apparatus.

25. The method of claim 24 , further comprising:

providing tension to the control line disposed in the control line pathway of the control line positioning apparatus to impart the load on the load transfer member.

26. The method of claim 24 , wherein the load transfer member is disposed adjacent to the control line pathway of a control line positioning apparatus.

27. A method to run a control line on a rig, comprising:

feeding the control line through a control line pathway through the rig;

engaging the control line in the control line pathway with a load transfer member; and

measuring a load imparted to the load transfer member by the control line with a load measuring device coupled to the load transfer member,

wherein the control line positioning apparatus comprises a plurality of rolling members rotatably attached thereto to define the control line pathway in the control line positioning apparatus.

28. An apparatus to feed a control line through a rig, comprising:

a drive member having an actuator coupled thereto,

wherein the drive member is configured to engage the control line and drive the control line along a longitudinal axis of the control line;

a control line positioning apparatus configured to receive and direct the control line through a control line pathway in the control line positioning apparatus,

wherein the drive member is disposed adjacent to the control line pathway in the control line positioning apparatus;

a back-up member configured to engage the control line,

wherein the back-up member is disposed adjacent to the drive member such that the control line is disposed between the drive member and the back-up member;

wherein the back-up member comprises a rolling member rotatably secured to the rig such that the rolling member is configured to rotate when engaged with the control line; and

wherein the rolling member is movable at least one of toward and away from the control line.

29. The apparatus of claim 28 , wherein the rolling member is configured to be locked in a position with respect to the control line.

30. The apparatus of claim 28 , wherein the drive member comprises a drive roller configured to engage the control line.

31. The apparatus of claim 28 , wherein the actuator comprises at least one of an electrically, pneumatically, and fluidically powered motor to drive the drive member.

32. The apparatus of claim 28 , further comprising:

a pipe engaging apparatus configured to engage a tubular member and configured to receive and direct the control line through a control line pathway in the pipe engaging apparatus;

wherein the drive member is disposed adjacent to the control line pathway in the pipe engaging apparatus.

33. The apparatus of claim 28 , wherein the drive member is configured to engage the control line and drive the control line in a first direction along a longitudinal axis of the control line and in a second direction along a longitudinal axis of the control line.

34. A method to feed a control line through a rig, comprising:

engaging the control line with a drive member coupled to an actuator; and

energizing the actuator to drive the control line with the drive member along a longitudinal axis of the control line;

the method further comprising at least one of:

moving the back-up member into engagement with the control line;

moving the back-up member towards the drive member; and

moving the rolling member away from the drive member.

35. The method of claim 34 , further comprising:

directing the control line through a control line pathway in a control line positioning apparatus; and

wherein the drive member is disposed adjacent to the control line pathway of the control line positioning apparatus.

36. The method of claim 34 , further comprising providing a back-up member disposed adjacent to the drive member such that the control line is disposed between the drive member and the back-up member.

37. The method of claim 36 , wherein the back-up member comprises a rolling member rotatably secured to the rig such that the rolling member is configured to rotate when engaged with the control line.

38. The method of claim 34 , wherein the drive member comprises a drive roller configured to engage the control line.

39. The method of claim 34 , wherein the actuator comprises at least one of an electrically, pneumatically, and fluidically powered motor to drive the drive member.

40. The method of claim 34 , further comprising:

directing the control line through a control line pathway in a pipe engaging apparatus; and

wherein the drive member is disposed adjacent to the control line pathway of the pipe engaging apparatus.

41. The method of claim 34 , further comprising:

driving the control line with the drive member in a first direction along a longitudinal axis of the control line; and

driving the control line with the drive member in a second direction along a longitudinal axis of the control line.

42. The method of claim 34 , further comprising:

engaging the control line with the drive member; and

cutting the control line such that the control line remains engaged with the drive member.
