Abstract

A method and apparatus for sharing personal media using a digital recorder transfers multimedia content via email to a digital video recorder.

Claims (50)

1. A method for sharing multimedia content using a digital video recorder (DVR), comprising:

receiving, at a server, authentication information for a portable device, the authentication information indicative of the portable device being authorized to access multimedia content items stored on the DVR;

receiving, at the server, a selection of accessible multimedia content items stored on the DVR in a secure format;

in response to receiving the selection of the accessible multimedia content items stored on the DVR, and further in response to receiving the authentication information, providing to the portable device a program guide display, the program guide display comprising

one or more links for retrieving the accessible multimedia content items stored on the DVR;

receiving, at the server, data indicative of a user selection made with the portable device of a link of the one or more links; and

sending, to the portable device, at least a portion of a multimedia content item associated with the link in an unsecure format for display.

2. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the server receives the at least the portion of the multimedia content in the secure format, and decodes the at least the portion of the multimedia content item prior to sending the at least the portion of the multimedia content item to the portable device in the unsecure format.

3. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the selection specifies a position within the multimedia content item, the position indicative of the at least the portion of the multimedia content item to be retrieved from the DVR by the server prior to being sent to the portable device.

4. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the program guide display comprises a list of the multimedia content items stored on the DVR, and further comprising:

generating for display the list on a display coupled to the portable device.

5. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the DVR records multimedia content from broadcast signals and records multimedia content downloaded via the Internet.

6. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the server stores the at least the portion of the multimedia content item on at least one storage device remote from the portable device prior to sending the at least the portion of the multimedia content item to the portable device.

7. A method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, at the server, metadata relating to the accessible multimedia content items stored on the DVR; and

generating the program guide display provided to the portable device based on the metadata received.

8. A non-transitory computer readable medium having non-transitory computer readable instructions encoded thereon comprising:

an instruction for receiving, at a server, authentication information for a portable device, the authentication information indicative of the portable device being authorized to access multimedia content items stored on the DVR;

an instruction for receiving, at the server, a selection of accessible multimedia content items stored on the DVR in a secure format;

an instruction for, in response to receiving the selection of the accessible multimedia content items stored on the DVR, and further in response to receiving the authentication information, providing to the portable device a program guide display, the program guide display comprising

one or more links for retrieving the accessible multimedia content items stored on the DVR;

an instruction for, receiving, at the server, data indicative of a user selection made with the portable device of a link of the one or more links; and

an instruction for sending, to the portable device, at least a portion of a multimedia content item associated with the link in an unsecure format for display.

9. A non-transitory computer readable medium as recited in claim 8 , further comprising an instruction for the server to receive the at least the portion of the multimedia content in the secure format, and decode the at least the portion of the multimedia content item prior to sending the at least the portion of the multimedia content item to the portable device in the unsecure format.

10. A non-transitory computer readable medium as recited in claim 8 , wherein the selection specifies a position within the multimedia content item, the position indicative of the at least the portion of the multimedia content item to be retrieved from the DVR by the server prior to being sent to the portable device.

11. A non-transitory computer readable medium as recited in claim 8 , wherein the program guide display comprises

a list of the multimedia content items stored on the DVR, and further comprising:

an instruction for generating for display the list on a display coupled to the portable device.

12. A non-transitory computer readable medium as recited in claim 8 , wherein the DVR records multimedia content from broadcast signals and records multimedia content downloaded via the Internet.

13. A non-transitory computer readable medium as recited in claim 8 , further comprising an instruction for the server to store the at least the portion of the multimedia content item on at least one storage device remote from the portable device prior to sending the at least the portion of the multimedia content item to the portable device.

14. A non-transitory computer readable medium as recited in claim 8 , further comprising:

an instruction for receiving, at the server, metadata relating to the accessible multimedia content items stored on the DVR; and

an instruction for generating the program guide display provided to the portable device based on the metadata received.

15. A system for sharing multimedia content using a digital video recorder (DVR), the system comprising:

communications circuitry; and

control circuitry configured to:

receive, at a server, authentication information for a portable device, the authentication information indicative of the portable device being authorized to access multimedia content items stored on the DVR;

receive, at the server a selection of accessible multimedia content items stored on the DVR in a secure format;

in response to receiving the selection of the accessible multimedia content items stored on the DVR, and further in response to receiving the authentication information, provide to the portable device a program guide display, the program guide display comprising one or more links for retrieving the accessible multimedia content items stored on the DVR;

receive, at the server, data indicative of a user selection made with the portable device of a link of the one or more links; and

provide, to the portable device, at least a portion of a multimedia content item associated with the link in an unsecure format for display.

16. A system as recited in claim 15 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to cause the server to receive the at least the portion of the multimedia content in the secure format, and decode the at least the portion of the multimedia content item prior to sending the at least the portion of the multimedia content item to the portable device in the unsecure format.

17. A system as recited in claim 15 , wherein the selection specifies a position within the multimedia content item, the position indicative of the at least the portion of the multimedia content item to be retrieved from the DVR by the server prior to being sent to the portable device.

18. A system as recited in claim 15 , wherein the program guide display comprises a list of the multimedia content items stored on the DVR, and wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

generate for display the list on a display coupled to the portable device.

19. A system as recited in claim 15 , wherein the DVR records multimedia content from broadcast signals and records multimedia content downloaded via the Internet.

20. A system as recited in claim 15 , wherein the server stores the at least the portion of the multimedia content item on at least one storage device remote from the portable device prior to sending the at least the portion of the multimedia content item to the portable device.

21. A system as recited in claim 15 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

receive, at the server, metadata relating to the multimedia content item from the DVR; and

generate the program guide display provided to the portable device based on the metadata received.
