Abstract

An apparatus is provided for detecting the presence of an obstruction with respect to a height-adjustable bed. The apparatus includes one or more sensors coupled to the bed. At least one of the sensors has an output signal which is variable in response to changes in a weight applied to the support surface. The apparatus also includes a controller having inputs configured to receive the output signals from the sensor or sensors. The controller is configured to monitor the output signals, and turn on a room light if a change in position of a body relative to a support surface of the bed is detected.

Claims (24)

1. An apparatus for detecting a position of a body on a support surface of a bed, the apparatus comprising:

a first sensor coupled to the bed, the first sensor having an output signal which is variable in response to changes in position of a body supported by the support surface; and

a controller having inputs configured to receive the output signal from the first sensor, the controller being configured to monitor the output signal, to provide an indication of changes in the position of the body relative to the support surface, to provide an indication if the body exits the support surface, and to turn on a room light upon detection of the body moving out of a predetermined position on the support surface.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first sensor has an output signal which is variable in response to changes in a weight applied to the support surface.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , comprising a second sensor located adjacent the support surface, wherein the second sensor has an output signal which is variable in response to changes in the position of the body on the support surface, the controller has inputs configured to receive the output signals from the second sensor, the controller is configured to monitor the output signals from the first and second sensors to provide an indication if the body exits the support surface and to turn on a room light upon detection of the body exiting the support surface.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the first and second sensors are different types of sensors.

5. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the second sensor is at least one of a resistive pressure sensor, a capacitance sensor, and a piezoelectric sensor.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first sensor is a load cell.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a plurality of second sensors are located adjacent the support surface, and each of the plurality of second sensors is electrically coupled to the controller.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the bed includes a base frame and a weigh frame, the weigh frame is configured to support the support surface of the bed, the sensor includes a plurality of load cells configured to couple the weigh frame to the base frame, and each of the plurality of load cells is electrically coupled to the controller.

9. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the support surface of the bed includes a deck and a mattress located on the deck, and the second sensor is coupled to one of the mattress and the deck.

10. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the deck includes a head deck section, a seat deck section, a thigh deck section, and a leg deck section, and the second sensor includes at least one head sensor coupled to the head deck section, at least one seat sensor coupled to the seat deck section, and at least one thigh sensor coupled to the thigh deck section.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising an alarm coupled to the controller, wherein the controller has a first mode of operation in which the alarm is activated by the controller only when the sensors detect that the body has exited the bed, a second mode of operation in which the alarm is activated by the controller when the head, seat and thigh sensors detect that the body has moved away from a central portion of the support surface, and a third mode of operation in which the alarm is activated by the controller when the head sensor detects that the body has moved away from a central portion of the head deck section.

12. The apparatus of claim 3 , comprising an alarm coupled to the controller, wherein the controller has a first mode of operation in which the alarm is activated by the controller only when the sensor detects that the body has exited the bed, and a second mode of operation in which the alarm is activated by the controller when the second sensor detects that the body has moved away from a central portion of the support surface.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller includes an output coupled to a communication port to provide a nurse call alarm upon detection of the body moving out of a predetermined position on the support surface of the bed.

14. An apparatus for detecting a position of a body on a support surface of a bed, the apparatus comprising:

at least one sensor coupled to the bed, the at least one sensor having an output signal which is variable in response to changes in the position of the body on the support surface; and

a controller having at least one input configured to received the output signal from the at least one sensor and an output, the controller being configured to monitor the position of the body on the support surface and turn on a room light if a predetermined condition is met.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , comprising an alarm coupled to the output of the controller, wherein the controller is configured to activate the alarm if a predetermined condition is met.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the controller has first, second and third different modes of operation, and the alarm is activated by the controller when different levels of patient movement on the support surface are detected for the first, second and third modes of operation.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 , comprising a nurse call alarm coupled to the controller, wherein the controller activates the nurse call alarm to send an indication of the predetermined condition to a remote location.

18. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the controller is configured to deactivate the alarm if the body returns to a position on the support surface.

19. The apparatus of claim 14 , comprising a control panel coupled to the controller, wherein the control panel enables the predetermined condition to be selected.

20. The apparatus of claim 14 , comprising an indicator providing an indication of a status of the bed and being spaced from the room light.
