Advanced logic system diagnostics and monitoring
View Patent ↗The Advanced Logic System (ALS) is a complete control system architecture, based on a hardware platform rather than a software-based microprocessor system. It is significantly different from other PLC-type control system architectures, by implementing a FPGA in the central control unit. Standard FPGA logic circuits are used rather than a software-based microprocessor which eliminate problems with software based microprocessor systems, such as software common-mode failures. It provides a highly reliable system suitable for safety critical control systems, including nuclear plant protection systems. The system samples process inputs, provides for digital bus communications, applies a control logic function, and provides for controlled outputs. The architecture incorporates advanced features such as diagnostics, testability, and redundancy on multiple levels. It additionally provides significant improvements in failure detection, isolation, and mitigation for the highest level of integrity and reliability.
1. A service and test circuit board useful for providing integrity and diagnostic monitoring of a hardware based control system comprising:
a) a redundant core within at least one programmable logic device,
b) wherein said redundant core communicates to a bus,
c) wherein said redundant core initiates communication on said bus as a master,
d) wherein said hardware based control system communicates on said bus as a slave,
e) wherein said at least one programmable logic device incorporates a redundancy checker and an integrity monitor,
f) wherein said hardware based control system is configured to provide at least one process function, and
g) wherein said redundant core incorporates a black box recorder,
whereby said redundant core provides said integrity and diagnostic monitoring of said hardware based control system by use of said bus.
2. The service and test circuit board of claim 1 wherein said bus is controlled and synchronized to a system frame.
3. The service and test circuit board of claim 1 wherein an external non-volatile memory stores application specific setpoints.
4. The service and test circuit board of claim 1 wherein said black box recorder
i) continuously monitors information transmitted on said bus, and
ii) is controlled by a scheduler.
