Abstract

Apparatuses and methods for treating a wound by applying reduced or negative pressure to the wound can include a wound cover, a fluid collection container, a vacuum pump, an inflation pump, and one or more conduits. The wound cover can be configured to move between at least a relatively rigid, generally raised position and a relatively flexible, generally collapsed position according to a predetermined program or in response to input from a user or one of more sensors. In some embodiments, the wound cover can be configured to move between at least the relatively rigid, generally raised position and the relatively flexible, generally collapsed position by adjusting the air pressure in one or more channels in the wound cover or by adjusting or by adjusting the length of piezoelectric or other length changing material supported by the wound cover.

Claims (42)

1. An apparatus for the application of negative pressure wound therapy to a the wound, comprising:

a wound cover configured to be placed over and enclose the wound so as to define a space between at least a portion of the wound cover and the wound and to maintain a reduced pressure in the space when reduced pressure is applied to the space;

a first length changing member supported by the wound cover, wherein;

the first length changing member extends across at least a portion of the wound cover from one side portion of the wound cover toward another side portion of the wound cover;

the first length changing member changes length when activated to thereby exert a force on the wound cover; and

the first length changing member comprises a material that changes length when an electrical current is supplied to the material; and

a second length changing member supported by the wound cover, wherein;

the second length changing member extends from one side portion of the wound cover toward another side portion of the wound cover; and

the second length changing member changes length when activated to thereby exert a force on the wound cover.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the material is a piezoelectric material.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a reduced pressure supply source configured to reduce the pressure in the space between the wound cover and the wound.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , further comprising a collection system between the wound cover and the reduced pressure supply source.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a fluid collection container in fluid communication with the wound cover;

a vacuum pump comprising a pump motor, the vacuum pump being configured to provide reduced pressure to the space between the wound cover and the wound;

one or more conduits configured to at least communicate the reduced pressure from the vacuum pump to the space between the wound cover and the wound and to permit fluid to flow from the wound to fluid collection container; and

a control device configured to control the level of reduced pressure applied to the space between the wound cover and the wound and configured to selectively activate the first length changing member.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising at least one sensor supported by the cover configured to provide data to the control device, the control device being configured to accept an input of the data and to process the data.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , further comprising an alarm device that is operably connected to the control device and configured to provide an audible or visual warning when the data exceeds or falls below a predetermined value.

8. The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising a sensor configured to detect an amount of oxygen in a portion of the blood flowing into or adjacent to the wound.

9. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the control device is configured to increase the level of the reduced pressure supplied to the wound when the amount of oxygen in a portion of the blood flowing into or adjacent to the wound falls below a predetermined value.

10. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the control device is configured to decrease the level of the reduced pressure supplied to the wound when the amount of oxygen in a portion of the blood flowing into or adjacent to the wound rises above a predetermined value.

11. The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising a wound packing material positioned between the wound cover and the wound.

12. The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising an absorbable matrix positioned between the wound cover and the wound.

13. The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising a display and recording device that is operably connected to the control device.

14. A method for treating a wound of a patient using the apparatus of claim 1 , comprising:

placing the wound cover over the wound so as to enclose the wound; and

applying negative pressure to the wound while enclosed by the wound cover;

exerting a force on the wound cover by changing a length of the first length changing member.

15. An apparatus for the application of negative pressure wound therapy to a wound, comprising:

a wound cover configured to be placed over and enclose the wound so as to define a space between at least a portion of the wound cover and the wound and to maintain a reduced pressure in the space when reduced pressure is applied to the space; and

a first length changing member supported by the wound cover, wherein:

the first length changing member extends across at least a portion of the wound cover from one side portion of the wound cover toward another side portion of the wound cover; and

the first length changing member changes length when activated to thereby exert a force on the wound cover;

wherein the the first length changing member is activated in response to an input of data obtained by a sensor in communication with the apparatus.

16. An apparatus for the application of negative pressure wound therapy to a wound, comprising:

a wound cover configured to be placed over and enclose the wound so as to define a space between at least a portion of the wound cover and the wound and to maintain a reduced pressure in the space when reduced pressure is applied to the space;

a first length changing member supported by the wound cover, wherein:

the first length changing member extends across at least a portion of the wound cover from one side portion of the wound cover toward another side portion of the wound cover;

the first length changing member changes length when activated to thereby exert a force on the wound cover; and

the first length changing member comprises a material that changes length when an electrical current is supplied to the material; and

a second length changing member supported by the wound cover, wherein the second length changing member extends from one side portion of the wound cover toward another side portion of the wound cover in a direction that is approximately perpendicular to the first length changing member.
