Abstract

An IV pole mountable, therapeutic infusate processing device is incorporated into a hypothermia system to receive therapeutic fluid(s), such as normal saline, peritioneal dialysis solution, or other crystalloid solution, to heat such therapeutic fluid(s) a few degrees centigrade above normal body temperature and to direct the resulting heated infusate to and through a selected anatomical portion of a patients body to raise the temperature of that body portion so as to affect any cancerous or other tumors that may be located therein. The processing device is provided with touch screen controls and visual indicators to facilitate its proper use; while the system further includes temperature and pressure sensors to monitor the hyperthermia processing to insure patient safety.

Claims (17)

1. A partial body hyperthermia treatment system for providing partial body hyperthermia treatment within at least a portion of a cavity within a body: comprising;

(a) fluid processing means for processing a predetermined fluid, including utilizing an electro-magnetic induction fluid heating means to heat the fluid and fluid pump means to pump the fluid through fluid passage means, said fluid heating means and said fluid pump means being located outside the body;

(b) fluid flow tubing means for providing fluid passage means to and through said fluid processing means for subsequent flow of the fluid to and into a body cavity for hyperthermia treatment within the body cavity and from the body cavity back to said fluid processing means;

(c) said fluid pump means providing a predetermined fluid flow rate for the predetermined fluid;

(d) said fluid heater heating means heating the predetermined fluid to a predetermined temperature;

(e) said predetermined temperature not to exceed a physiological temperature which is a selected to be above normative for a body; and

(f) said predetermined fluid flow rate not to exceed a predetermined ml/min.

2. The partial body hyperthermia treatment system of claim 1 wherein the treatment fluid may be either normal saline, peritioneal dialysis fluid or other crystalloid solution.

3. A partial body hyperthermia treatment system for providing partial body hyperthermia treatment within at least a portion of a cavity within a body: comprising;

(a) fluid processing means for processing a predetermined fluid to heat the predetermined fluid and fluid pump means to pump the predetermined fluid through fluid passage means;

(b) said fluid processing means being of a size and weight that permits it to be mounted on a conventionally available standard IV pole;

(c) fluid flow tubing means providing fluid passage means for the predetermined fluid to flow to and through said fluid processing means for subsequent flow of the predetermined fluid into a body cavity for hyperthermia treatment within the body cavity and from the body cavity back to said fluid processing means;

(d) said fluid pump means providing a predetermined fluid flow rate for the predetermined fluid;

(e) said fluid heater heating means heating the predetermined fluid to a predetermined temperature;

(f) said predetermined temperature not to exceed a physiological temperature which is above normative for a body; and

(g) said predetermined fluid flow rate not to exceed said predetermined amount.

4. The partial body hyperthermia treatment system of claim 3 wherein the treatment fluid may be either normal saline, peritioneal dialysis fluid or other crystalloid solution.
