Abstract

A converter converts mechanical energy of a piston to and from electrical energy during each piston cycle.

Claims (24)

1. A method of retrofitting an internal combustion engine for electrical power generation, the internal combustion engine having a plurality of pistons connected to a common crankshaft, the method comprising:

disconnecting the plurality of pistons from the common crankshaft;

applying respective power converters to at least a portion of the plurality of pistons, wherein each power converter is operable to convert mechanical energy of a corresponding one of the at least a portion of the plurality of pistons to and from electrical energy; and

while the common crankshaft is disconnected from the plurality of pistons, driving the at least a portion of the plurality of pistons with the respective power converters in a relative phase relationship substantially similar to a relative phase relationship imposed by the common crankshaft.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying a magnet to each piston, wherein each respective power converter includes an armature operable with the magnet to apply a force to the piston.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the armature is operable with the magnet to generate electric current in response to movement of the magnet.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the magnet is an electromagnet.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the magnet is a permanent magnet.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing a thermal controller that acts to limit thermal excursions of at least a portion of the engine.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the thermal controller includes a cooling system.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the thermal controller includes insulation.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the respective power converters are electrically coupled to an energy management system.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the energy management system includes an energy storage device.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the energy storage device includes at least one of a battery, a capacitor, an inductor, or a mechanical energy storage device.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the internal combustion engine includes an electrically powered reaction trigger, and further comprising electrically coupling the energy management system to the electrically powered reaction trigger.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the respective power converters are electrically coupled to a control system.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the control system is configured to drive the pistons synchronously.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the control system is configured to determine whether to drive a selected piston at least partially in response to a determined operating condition.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the determined operating condition includes at least one of incline, temperature, current draw, speed, acceleration, braking, load, fuel composition, engine emissions, power, local rules, or engine settings.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the control system is configured to determine a velocity profile of a piston stroke at least partially in response to a determined operating condition.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the determined operating condition includes at least one of incline, temperature, current draw, speed, acceleration, braking, load, fuel composition, engine emissions, power, local rules, or engine settings.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the control system is configured to determine a compression ratio at least partially in response to a determined operating condition.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the determined operating condition includes at least one of incline, temperature, current draw, speed, acceleration, braking, load, fuel composition, engine emissions, power, local rules, or engine settings.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the respective power converters are configured to drive the at least a portion of the plurality of pistons during an intake stroke, an exhaust stroke, and a compression stroke, and is configured to convert mechanical energy of the at least a portion of the plurality of pistons to electrical energy during a power stroke.
