Abstract

A system and method for registering an internet protocol (IP) phone in a dual-link architecture is disclosed. The method comprises pre-registering the IP phone to establish a client link with a first telephony server and a second telephony server. The pre-registration comprises: identifying the first and second telephony servers designated for the IP phone; sending a registration request to the first and second telephony servers from the IP phone to pre-register the IP phone with the telephony servers; and setting one of the telephony servers as a primary telephony server by sending an in-service request message, with the other server set in a hot-standby mode.

Claims (61)

1. A method for registering an internet protocol (IP) phone linked to a first telephony server and a second telephony server in a dual-link architecture, comprising:

pre-registering the IP phone to establish a client link with the first and second telephony servers, comprising:

identifying the first telephony server and the second telephony server designated for the IP phone in the dual-link architecture; and

sending a registration request to the first and second telephony servers from the IP phone to pre-register the IP phone with the first and second telephony servers; and setting one of the first and second telephony servers as a primary telephony server, comprising:

sending an in-service request from the IP phone to one of the first and second telephony servers to identify the primary telephony server for the IP phone and set a remaining server of the first and second telephony servers as a secondary server in a hot standby mode;

further comprising conducting a fail-over process for the IP phone from the primary telephony server to a secondary telephony server, comprising:

sending an out-service request from the IP phone to the primary telephony server;

sending an in-service request from the IP phone to one of the first and second telephony servers that is not the primary telephony server to act as the secondary telephony server; and

receiving an in-service acknowledgment from the secondary telephony server at the IP phone.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein pre-registering the IP phone further comprises receiving a registration acknowledgement from the first and second telephony servers.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein sending a registration request to the first and second telephony servers further comprises establishing a first transmission control protocol (TCP) connection between the IP phone and the first and telephony server and a second TCP connection between the IP phone and the second telephony server.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein sending a registration request to the first and second telephony servers further comprises negotiating security protocols between the IP phone and the first and second telephony servers.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein sending a registration request to the first and second telephony servers further comprises performing device registration protocols between the IP phone and the first and second telephony servers to enable IP phone applications and services available on the IP phone to operate on one of the first and second telephony servers.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving an out-service acknowledgement from the primary telephony server at the IP phone.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising establishing a server-link between the first telephony server and the second telephony server to enable communication between the first and second telephony servers.

8. A method for registering an internet protocol (IP) phone linked to a first telephony server and a second telephony server in a dual-link architecture, comprising:

pre-registering the IP phone to establish a client link with the first and second telephony servers, comprising:

identifying the first telephony server and the second telephony server designated for the IP phone in the dual-link architecture; and

sending a registration request to the first and second telephony servers from the IP phone to pre-register the IP phone with the first and second telephony servers; and setting one of the first and second telephony servers as a primary telephony server, comprising:

sending an in-service request from the IP phone to one of the first and second telephony servers to identify the primary telephony server for the IP phone and set a remaining server of the first and second telephony servers as a secondary server in a hot standby mode;

further comprising conducting a fail-back process for the IP phone from a secondary telephony server to the primary telephony server, comprising:

sending an out-service request from the IP phone to the secondary telephony server;

sending an in-service request from the IP phone to the primary telephony server to act as the primary telephony server; and

receiving an in-service acknowledgment from the primary telephony server at the IP phone.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising receiving an out-service acknowledgement from the secondary telephony server at the IP phone.

10. A system for registering an internet protocol (IP) phone in a dual-link architecture, comprising:

a first telephony server;

a second telephony server;

a registration module configured to pre-register the IP phone to establish a client link with the first and second telephony servers, comprising:

identifying the first telephony server and the second telephony server designated for the IP phone in the dual-link architecture; and

sending a registration request to the first and second telephony servers from the IP phone to pre-register the IP phone with the first and second telephony servers; and

a server selection module configured to send an in-service request from the IP phone to one of the first and second telephony servers to identify the primary telephony server for the IP phone and set a remaining server of the first and second telephony servers as a secondary server in a hot standby mode;

further comprising conducting a fail-over process for the IP phone from the primary telephony server to a secondary telephony server, comprising:

sending an out-service request from the IP phone to the primary telephony server;

sending an in-service request from the IP phone to one of the first and second telephony servers that is not the primary telephony server to act as the secondary telephony server; and

receiving an in-service acknowledgment from the secondary telephony server at the IP phone.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first telephony server and the second telephony server that are designated for the IP phone are identified using a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server connected to the IP phone via a network connection.

12. The system of claim 10 , further comprising a first transmission control protocol (TCP) connection setup between the IP phone and the first telephony server and a second TCP connection setup between the IP phone and the second telephony server.

13. A computer program product, comprising a non-transitory computer usable medium having a computer readable program code embodied therein, said computer readable program code adapted to be executed to implement a method for registering an internet protocol (IP) phone linked to a first telephony server and a second telephony server in a dual-link architecture, comprising:

pre-registering the IP phone to establish a client link with the first and second telephony servers, comprising:

identifying the first telephony server and the second telephony server designated for the IP phone in the dual-link architecture; and
