Abstract

Certain example embodiments relate to improved seals for glass articles. Certain example embodiments relate to a composition used for sealing an insulted glass unit. In certain example embodiments the composition includes vanadium oxide, barium oxide, zinc oxide, and at least one additional additive. For instance, another additive that is a different metal oxide or different metal chloride may be provided. In certain example embodiments, a vacuum insulated glass unit includes first and second glass substrates that are sealed together with a seal that includes the above-described composition.

Claims (31)

1. A vacuum insulted glass (VIG) window unit, comprising:

first and second substantially parallel, spaced apart glass substrates in the window unit;

an edge seal provided around a periphery of the first and second substrates to form a hermetic seal therebetween and at least partially defining a gap between the first and second substrates,

wherein the gap is provided at a pressure less than atmospheric, and wherein a plurality of spacers are provided in the gap to space the substrates of the window unit apart,

wherein the edge seal is formed from a frit material at least initially having a composition comprising:

Ingredient

Wt. %

vanadium oxide

~50-60%,

barium oxide

~27-33%,

zinc oxide

 ~9-12%; and

a first additive comprising SrCl 2 constituting between about 1-8 wt. %.

2. A vacuum insulted glass (VIG) window unit, comprising:

first and second substantially parallel, spaced apart glass substrates in the window unit;

an edge seal provided around a periphery of the first and second substrates to form a hermetic seal therebetween and at least partially defining a gap between the first and second substrates,

wherein the gap is provided at a pressure less than atmospheric, and wherein a plurality of spacers are provided in the gap to space the substrates of the window unit apart,

wherein the edge seal is formed from a frit material at least initially having a composition comprising:

Ingredient

Wt. %

vanadium oxide

~50-60%,

barium oxide

~27-33%,

zinc oxide

 ~9-12%; and

a first additive comprising SnCl 2 and which constitutes between about 1-8 wt. %.

3. The VIG window unit of claim 2 , wherein the frit material further comprises a second additive comprising between about 1-8 wt. % of Al 2 O 3 .

4. The VIG window unit of claim 2 , wherein the frit material further comprises a second additive comprising between about 0.5-5 wt. % of SiO 2 .

5. The VIG window unit of claim 1 , wherein the frit material has a melting temperature less than about 400 degrees C.
