Abstract

Techniques are provided for presenting a route in a manner that emphasizes the route and provides context information. For example, a vivid color or vivid colors may be used to display the route, and pastel colors or other desaturated colors may be used for non-route context information. This may result in a map in which the vivid colors of the route stand out over the faded style of the non-route context information to emphasize the route. In this manner, the map may both emphasize the route and provide context information for the route.

Claims (72)

1. A system for presenting a route, the system comprising:

a storage medium that stores mapping data including at least one point of interest, and each of primary and secondary display attributes for each of first and second elements;

a rendering device configured to render mapping information; and

at least one processor configured by a set of instructions to:

receive a request related to rendering of a map,

determine at least one route to be included in the map based on the request;

determine, based on the at least one route to be included in the map, a map region;

determine, based on the at least one route to be included in the map, one or more types of roads to be traversed;

identify, based on the map region, the first and the second elements that are apart from the at least one route and different from each other;

identify, based on the one or more types of roads to be traversed, the at least one point of interest to be displayed along the at least one route;

access the storage medium; and

enable, based on information accessed from the storage medium, a map to be rendered on the rendering device and including part or all of the at least one route and the map region, the map including the at least one point of interest displayed along the at least one route, and each of the first element and the second element with the primary display attribute being rendered for the first element and the secondary display attribute being rendered for the second element.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the map is rendered on the rendering device with only one point of interest.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein a symbol represents a type of point of interest.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein a symbol represents a particular point of interest.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the map is rendered on the rendering device with more than one point of interest.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein each point of interest is represented by a single symbol.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein more than one symbol is used to represent the more than one point of interest.

8. The system of claim 5 , wherein at least one symbol represents a type of point of interest.

9. The system of claim 5 , wherein at least one symbol represents a particular point of interest.

10. The system of claim 5 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to:

receive from a user, a manual selection of preferred types of points of interest to be displayed.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more types of roads to be traversed is an interstate highway.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the at least one point of interest is commonly associated interstate highways.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more types of roads to be traversed is a non-interstate road.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the at least one point of interest is commonly associated non-interstate roads.

15. A computer-readable medium comprising one or more code segments configured to cause at least one processor to:

receive a request related to rendering of a map;

determine at least one route to be included in the map based on the request;

determine, based on the at least one route to be included in the map, a map region;

determine, based on the at least one route to be included in the map, one or more types of roads to be traversed;

identify, based on the map region, first and second elements that are apart from the at least one route and different from each other;

identify, based on the one or more types of roads to be traversed, at least one point of interest to be displayed along the at least one route;

access a database, the database including each of primary and secondary display attributes for each of the first and second elements; and

enable, based on information accessed from the database, a map to be rendered and including part or all of the at least one route and the map region, the map including the at least one point of interest, and each of the first element and the second element with the primary display attribute being rendered for the first element and the secondary display attribute being rendered for the second element.

16. The computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein enabling the map to be rendered includes enabling rendering of the map which includes only one point of interest.

17. The computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein a symbol represents a type of point of interest.

18. The computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein a symbol represents a particular point of interest.

19. The computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein enabling the map to be rendered includes enabling rendering of the map which includes more than one point of interest.

20. The computer-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein each of the more than one point of interest is represented by a single symbol.

21. The computer-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein more than one symbol is used to represent the more than one point of interest.

22. The computer-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein at least one symbol represents a type of point of interest.

23. The computer-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein at least one symbol represents a particular point of interest.

24. The computer-readable medium of claim 19 , further configured to:

receive from a user, a manual selection of preferred types of points of interest to be displayed.

25. The computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the one or more types of roads to be traversed is an interstate highway.

26. The computer-readable medium of claim 25 , wherein at the least one point of interest is commonly associated interstate highways.

27. The computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the one or more types of roads to be traversed is a non-interstate road.

28. The computer-readable medium of claim 27 , wherein the at least one point of interest is commonly associated non-interstate roads.

29. A computer-implemented method for displaying a route in a client-server system comprising:

receiving a request related to rendering of a map;

determining, with at least one processor, at least one route to be included in the map based on the request;

determining, based on the at least one route to be included in the map, a map region;

determining, based on the at least one route to be included in the map, one or more types of roads to be traversed;

identifying, based on the map region, first and second elements that are apart from the at least one route and different from one another;

identifying, based on the one or more types of roads to be traversed, at least one point of interest to be displayed along the at least one route;

accessing a database, the database including at least one symbol to represent the at least one point of interest, a primary display attribute and a secondary display attribute for each of the first and second elements; and

enabling, based on information accessed from the database, a map to be rendered on a display and including part or all of the at least one route and the map region, the map including the at least one point of interest, and each of the first element and the second element with the primary display attribute being rendered for the first element and the secondary display attribute being rendered for the second element.
