Systems, devices, and methods including implantable devices with anti-microbial properties
Systems, devices, methods, and compositions are described for providing an actively controllable implant configured to, for example, monitor, treat, or prevent microbial growth or adherence to the implant.
1 . A insertable device, comprising:
a body structure having an outer surface and an inner surface defining one or more fluid-flow passageways;
one or more anti-microbial regions of the body structure including at least one selectively actuatable anti-microbial agent reservoir, the reservoir configured to be actuated by the presence of at least one microorganism, and configured to actively deliver one or more anti-microbial agents to the one or more anti-microbial regions of the body structure.
2 . The insertable device of claim 1 , further comprising at least one sensor operably coupled to at least one selectively actuatable anti-microbial agent reservoir.
3 . The insertable device of claim 2 , wherein the at least one sensor is configured to detect the presence of at least one microorganism in at least one of the anti-microbial regions within at least one of the one or more fluid-flow passageways.
4 . The insertable device of claim 1 , wherein the anti-microbial regions form a spatial or temporal pattern extending over at least a portion of the body structure.
5 . The insertable device of claim 1 , further comprising at least one sensor configured for detecting the presence of at least one microorganism.
6 . The insertable device of claim 5 , further comprising a controller operably coupled to the at least one sensor, the controller configured to actuate at least one of the anti-microbial regions in response to detected information from the at least one sensor.

The insertable device of claim 5 , further comprising a controller operably coupled to the at least one sensor, the controller configured to actuate at least one of the plurality of the anti-microbial regions in response to at least one of a scheduled program, external command, history of a previous presence of a microorganism, or history of a previous activation.
8 . The insertable device of claim 5 , further comprising activating means for concurrently or sequentially activating two or more of the anti-microbial regions determined to have at least one microorganism present.
9 . The insertable device of claim 8 , wherein the activating means includes one or more switching elements.
10 . The insertable device of claim 8 , wherein the activating means includes at least one of an electro-mechanical switch, electrochemical switch, optical switch, electrical switch, magnetic switch, electro-optical switch, or acousto-optical switch.
11 . The insertable device of claim 5 , wherein the sensor includes at least one identification code.
12 . The insertable device of claim 11 , wherein the at least one sensor is configured to implement instructions according to the at least one identification code.
13 . The insertable device of claim 5 , wherein the sensor is operably coupled to a microorganism biomarker array.

17 . The insertable device of claim 5 , wherein the sensor includes one or more functionalized cantilevers.
18 . The insertable device of claim 5 , wherein the sensor includes a microbial component capture layer.
19 . The insertable device of claim 18 , wherein the microbial component capture layer includes an array of different binding molecules that specifically bind one or more components of at least one microorganism.
20 . The insertable device of claim 5 , further comprising at least one computing device.
21 . The insertable device of claim 20 , further comprising one or more instructions that when executed on the at least one computing device cause the at least one computing device to generate at least one output to a user.
22 . The insertable device of claim 21 , wherein the at least one output includes at least one of a treatment protocol, identification of a detected microorganism, status of the insertable device, or location of a detected microorganism.
23 . The insertable device of claim 21 , wherein the user includes at least one entity.
24 . The insertable device of claim 23 , wherein the at least one entity includes at least one person or computer.
25 . The insertable device of claim 21 , wherein the at least one output is in real-time.
26 . The insertable device of claim 21 , wherein the at least one output is associated with historical information.
27 . The insertable device of claim 21 , wherein the at least one output includes output to a user readable display.
28 . The insertable device of claim 27 , wherein the user readable display is operably coupled to the insertable device.
29 . The insertable device of claim 27 , wherein the user readable display includes a human readable display.
30 . The insertable device of claim 27 , wherein the user readable display includes one or more active displays.
31 . The insertable device of claim 27 , wherein the user readable display includes one or more passive displays.
32 . The insertable device of claim 27 , wherein the user readable display includes one or more of a numeric format, graphical format, or audio format.
33 . The insertable device of claim 1 , wherein the anti-microbial agent includes at least one of an anti-fungal agent, anti-parasitic agent, bacteriophage or antibiotic.
34 . The insertable device of claim 33 , wherein the bacteriophage includes an engineered enzymatically active bacteriophage.
35 . The insertable device of claim 33 , wherein the anti-microbial agent includes at least two different bacteriophage sets.

48 . The insertable device of claim 1 , wherein the body structure further includes at least one porous material.
49 . The insertable device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of anti-microbial regions includes at least one porous material.
50 . The insertable device of claim 49 , wherein the at least one porous material is configured to capture at least one microorganism proximate to at least one of the inner surface or the outer surface of the body structure.
51 . The insertable device of claim 50 , wherein the at least one porous material is further configured to retain the captured microorganism.
52 . The insertable device of claim 50 , wherein the porous material includes hydrophobic polycations bound thereto.
53 . The insertable device of claim 52 , wherein the hydrophobic polycations are covalently bound to the porous material.
