Abstract

Methods and systems for calibrating a transmitter with I/Q imbalance and local oscillator feed-through include generating a test tone, frequency up-converting the test tone, monitoring one or more features of the up-converted test tone, and adjusting one or more features of the transmitter in response to the monitoring. The monitoring optionally includes monitoring a beating of the envelope of the up-converted test tone. In an embodiment, a first harmonic of the up-converted test tone is monitored for local oscillator feed-through (LOFT). Alternatively, baseband data inputs to the transmitter are disabled, and LOFT is measured by measuring power at the transmitter output. A second harmonic of the up-converted test tone is monitored for gain and phase imbalances. The adjusting optionally includes adjusting a gain imbalance, adjusting a phase imbalance, and/or adjusting a DC offset. The adjusting optionally includes an iterative refinement process.

Claims (24)

1. A system comprising:

a test tone generator configured to generate a test tone;

a transmitter configured to up-convert the test tone using quadrature signals to produce an up-converted test tone; and

an envelope detection path, comprising:

an envelope detector configure to detect an envelope signal of the up-converted test tone; and

a calibration control module configured to:

monitor the envelope signal by determining a strength of a first spectral component in the envelope signal at an odd harmonic frequency of the test tone and a strength of a second spectral component in the envelope signal at an even harmonic frequency of the test tone; and

adjust one or more of a plurality of compensation parameters in the transmitter to reduce a beating in the envelope signal based on the strength of the second spectral component after adjusting the one or more compensation parameters in the transmitter to reduce the beating in the envelope signal based on the strength of the first spectral component.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the strength of the odd spectral component is indicative of the amount of noise introduced into the up-converted test tone by the transmitter from local oscillator feed-through (LOFT).

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the strength of the even spectral component is indicative of the amount of noise introduced into the up-converted test tone by the transmitter from LOFT and an imbalance in the in-phase and quadrature channels of the transmitter.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the calibration control module is configured to iteratively adjust the one or more compensation parameters based on the first spectral component and the second spectral component.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the calibration control module further comprises an amplitude/gain control engine configured to progressively increase an amplitude of the test tone or a gain of the envelope detector with increasing iterations of the iterative adjustment of the one or more compensation parameters.

6. A method of calibrating a transmitter, the method comprising:

generating a test tone;

up-converting the test tone using quadrature signals to produce an up-converted test tone;

detecting an envelope signal of the up-converted test tone;

monitoring a beating in the envelope signal by determining a strength of a first spectral component in the envelope signal at an odd harmonic frequency of the test tone and a strength of a second spectral component in the envelope signal at an even harmonic frequency of the test tone; and

adjusting one or more compensation parameters in the transmitter to reduce the beating in the envelope signal based on the strength of the second spectral component after adjusting the one or more compensation parameters in the transmitter to reduce the beating in the envelope signal based on the strength of the first spectral component.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the strength of the odd spectral component is indicative of the amount of noise introduced into the up-converted test tone by the transmitter from local oscillator feed-through (LOFT).

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the strength of the even spectral component is indicative of the amount of noise introduced into the up-converted test tone by the transmitter from LOFT and an imbalance in the in-phase and quadrature channels of the transmitter.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the adjusting the one or more compensation parameters further comprises:

iteratively adjusting the one or more compensation parameters based on the first spectral component and the second spectral component.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

progressively increasing an amplitude of the test tone or a gain of the envelope signal with increasing iterations of the iterative adjustment of the one or more compensation parameters.
