Abstract

An apparatus and method is provided for lining the wall of a manhole. The apparatus may include a liner assembly, which includes an expansion device, an auxiliary bladder, a primary bladder, and a liner. The auxiliary bladder is first inflated near the top of the manhole. Next the primary bladder may be expanded to press the liner against the wall of the manhole. The liner, being impregnated with a resinous material, is pressed against the wall until the resinous material cures and hardens. The expansion device, auxiliary bladder, and primary bladder are then removed from the manhole. The result is a repaired manhole wall.

Claims (27)

1. A liner and bladder assembly for repairing the wall of a manhole having the advantage of minimizing the risk of tearing a liner, the assembly comprising:

an auxiliary bladder adapted to be positioned toward an upper portion of the wall of the manhole, the auxiliary bladder operatively attached to an end cap toward a lower portion of the auxiliary bladder;

a primary bladder at least partially surrounding the auxiliary bladder and end cap extending below the auxiliary bladder and end cap toward is lower portion of the wall of the manhole;

a liner at least partially surrounding the primary bladder and adapted to be positioned between the primary bladder and the wall of the manhole;

wherein the auxiliary bladder is adapted to inflate and expand outwardly to press the liner against the wall of the manhole along the upper portion of the wall of the manhole; and

wherein the primary bladder is adapted to inflate and press the liner against the wall of the manhole in the lower portion of the wall of the manhole.

2. The liner and bladder assembly of claim 1 wherein the liner extends the full height of the wall of the manhole.

3. The liner and bladder assembly of claim 1 wherein the auxiliary bladder and the primary bladder are configured to be inflated independently.

4. The liner and bladder assembly of claim 1 wherein the bladders are inflated about a substantially common, vertical axis.

5. The liner and bladder assembly of claim 1 wherein the upper portion of the wall of the manhole comprises the portion of the wall extending upwardly from the approximate midpoint of the wall of the manhole.

6. The liner assembly of claim 1 further comprising an expansion device operatively connect to the end cap.

7. The liner assembly of claim 6 wherein expansion device comprise a first end cap, an opposite second end cap, and an adjustable connecting member therebetween.

8. The liner assembly of claim 7 wherein the auxiliary end cap is positioned between the first end cap and the second end cap on the connecting member.

9. The liner assembly of claim 8 further comprising an air supply attached to the first end cap and passing through the auxiliary end cap.

10. The liner assembly of claim 9 wherein the first end cap comprises a pneumatic hookup.

11. The liner assembly of claim 10 wherein the first end of the auxiliary bladder is attached to the first end cap and the second end of the auxiliary bladder is attached to the auxiliary end cap.

12. The liner assembly of claim 11 wherein, the primary bladder comprises a first end attached to the first end cap, a second end attached to the second end cap, and a primary bladder body there between, wherein the primary bladder body at least partially surrounds the expansion device and the auxiliary bladder.

13. The liner assembly of claim 1 further comprising a connecting member extending at least partially through the auxiliary and primary bladders and operatively connected to the auxiliary bladder end cap.

14. The liner assembly of claim 13 wherein the connecting member is adjustable in length.

15. A liner and bladder assembly for repairing the wall of a manhole having the advantage of minimizing the risk of tearing a liner, the assembly comprising:

an auxiliary bladder adapted to be positioned toward an upper portion of the wall of the manhole, the auxiliary bladder operatively attached to an end cap toward a lower portion of the auxiliary bladder;

a primary bladder at least partially surrounding the auxiliary bladder and end cap and extending below the auxiliary bladder and end can and operatively attached to a primary bladder end cap away from the auxiliary bladder;

a liner at least partially surrounding the primary bladder and adapted to be positioned between the primary bladder and the wall of the manhole;

wherein the auxiliary bladder is adapted to inflate and expand outwardly to press the liner against the wall of the manhole along the upper portion of the wall of the manhole; and

wherein the primary bladder is adapted to inflate and press the liner against the wall of the manhole in the lower portion of the wall of the manhole.

16. The assembly of claim 15 further comprising a connecting member extending at least partially through the auxiliary and primary bladders and operatively connected to the auxiliary bladder end cap and the primary bladder end cap.

17. The assembly of claim 16 wherein the connecting member is adjustable in length to provide varying distance between the end caps.
