Abstract

The invention relates to a measuring device for detecting a body moving in relation to an, in particular, tubular container. Said device comprises at least one magnet unit which generates a magnetic field, measures this magnetic field and which is assigned to the container and/or to the magnetic body. The device also comprises at least one evaluation device connected to the magnet units and provided for receiving measurement signals of the magnet units. The aim of the invention is to improve a measuring device of this type in order to be able to easily determine, in addition to the position of the body in relation to the container in a longitudinal direction, the position of the body in relation to the container in the transverse direction with a relatively high level of accuracy. To this end, the magnet units comprise a maximum magnetic flux that is essentially perpendicular to the direction of the relative motion of the body and container.

Claims (24)

1. A measuring device for detecting the presence and movement of an arbitrarily shaped body relative to a tubular container, the measuring device comprising:

a magnetic field-generating unit and a magnetic field-measuring magnetic unit, both disposed on the container, said magnetic field-generating unit and said magnetic field-measuring magnetic unit each having a separate electrical connection supplying power or collecting measurement signals;

at least one evaluating device connected with the magnetic field-measuring magnetic unit for receiving measurement signals of the magnetic field-measuring magnetic unit; and

the magnetic field-generating unit generating a magnetic flux essentially perpendicular to the direction of the relative motion of the body to form a magnetic field and the magnetic field-measuring magnetic unit being arranged perpendicular to the relative direction of motion and measuring the magnetic field of the magnetic field-generating unit before and during modifications of the magnetic field caused by the object moving throughout the container.

2. A system, comprising:

a plurality of independently operable magnetic units, each magnetic unit is switchable for use as a magnetic field generating unit or a magnetic field measuring unit;

at least one evaluating device coupled to each magnetic unit, wherein each evaluating device is configurable to receive measurement signals from magnetic units configured as magnetic field measuring units; and

wherein each magnetic unit configured as a magnetic field generating unit generates a magnetic flux detectable and variable to each magnetic unit configured as a magnetic field measuring unit according to a position of an object relative to a container.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein at least one magnetic unit configured as a magnetic field measuring unit detects vertical motion of the object relative to the container.

4. The system of claim 2 wherein at least one magnetic unit configured as a magnetic field measuring unit detects radial motion of the object relative to the container.

5. The system of claim 2 wherein the magnetic units are switchable as magnetic field generating units or magnetic field measuring units during a measuring operation of the system.

6. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a computer, signals from a plurality of magnetic-field sensing units arranged in a tubular member perpendicular to a direction of movement of an object passing through the tubular member;

processing, by the computer, said signals to determine a radial position of the object relative to the tubular member.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising processing said signals to determine a shape of the object.

8. The method of claim 6 further comprising processing said signals to determine a size of the object.

9. The method of claim 6 further comprising processing said signals to determine a direction of movement of the object.

10. The method of claim 6 further comprising processing said signals to determine if the object is in contact with a wall of the tubular member.

11. The method of claim 6 further comprising displaying a graphical illustration of the object based on said signals.

12. The method of claim 6 further comprising changing a polarity of a magnetic field being generated by a magnetic-field generating unit arranged in the tubular member perpendicular to a direction of movement of an object passing through the tubular member.

13. The method of claim 6 further comprising changing an intensity of a magnetic field being generated by a magnetic-field generating unit arranged in the tubular member perpendicular to a direction of movement of an object passing through the tubular member.

14. The method of claim 6 further comprising producing an alternating magnetic field with a magnetic-field generating unit arranged in the tubular member perpendicular to a direction of movement of an object passing through the tubular member.

15. The method of claim 6 further comprising switching a magnetic-field generating unit, arranged in the tubular member perpendicular to a direction of movement of an object passing through the tubular member, to operate as one of said magnetic-field sensing units.

16. The method of claim 6 further comprising switching one of said magnetic-field sensing units, arranged perpendicular to a direction of movement of an object passing through the tubular member, to operate as a magnetic-field generating unit.
