Abstract

A wireless network, such as an LTE (“Long-Term Evolution”) network, may be configured to monitor a communications interface to set an inactivity timer that, in turn, sets the operating mode of a communications interface. The operating mode may comprise a time-domain reception pattern of the wireless device. A wireless device may monitor a communications interface that includes at least a first logical channel (for example for a first application) and a second logical channel (for example for a second application). Based on monitoring the communications interface, a first activity state for the first logical channel may be determined. Also, based on monitoring the communications interface, a second activity state (e.g., an activity status) for the second logical channel may be determined. An inactivity timer used by the communications interface may be set to a first value or a second value based on the first and second activity states. The battery life of a wireless device may be preserved by setting an inactivity timer responsive to the manner in which the wireless device is being used.

Claims (39)

1. A method of adapting a Discontinuous Reception (DRX) parameter value, the method comprising:

monitoring a traffic flow associated with a communication between user equipment and a network, the traffic flow comprising a plurality of data packets;

identifying a triggering event based upon an observed characteristic of the plurality of the data packets, wherein the observed characteristic comprises latency; and

adjusting the DRX parameter value in response to identifying the triggering event.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the DRX parameter value includes reconfiguring a reception pattern of the user equipment.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting comprises implicitly setting the DRX parameter value without communication with the network.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting comprises explicitly communicating with the network in order to set the DRX parameter value.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of the data packets include data corresponding to at least one of: voice, video, internet data, web browsing sessions, upload/download file transfer, instant messaging, e-mail, navigation services, RSS feeds or streaming media.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the characteristic further includes at least one of: bit rate, packets' inter-arrival time, packet loss value, quality of service, grade of service or service level.

7. A method of adapting a DRX parameter value, the method comprising:

monitoring a traffic flow associated with a communication between user equipment and a network, the traffic flow comprising a plurality of data packets;

identifying a characteristic for the plurality of the data packets; and

adjusting the DRX parameter value in response to the observed characteristic, wherein the observed characteristic comprises latency.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the adjusting comprises implicitly setting the DRX parameter value without communication with the network.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the adjusting comprises explicitly communicating with the network in order to set the DRX parameter value.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of the data packets include data corresponding to at least one of: voice, video, internet data, web browsing sessions, upload/download file transfer, instant messaging, e-mail, navigation services, RSS feeds or streaming media.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the characteristic further includes at least one of: quality of service, grade of service and service level.

12. User equipment, comprising:

at least one processor configured to:

monitor a traffic flow associated with a communication between user equipment and a network, the traffic flow comprising a plurality of data packets;

identify a triggering event based upon an observed characteristic of the plurality of the data packets, wherein the observed characteristic comprises latency; and

adjust the DRX parameter value in response to identifying the triggering event.

13. The user equipment of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of the data packets include data corresponding to at least one of: voice, video, internet data, web browsing sessions, upload/download file transfer, instant messaging, e-mail, navigation services, RSS feeds or streaming media.

14. The user equipment of claim 12 , wherein the characteristic further includes at least one of: quality of service, grade of service or service level.

15. A wireless network node comprising:

at least one processor configured to:

monitor a traffic flow associated with a communication between user equipment and a network, the traffic flow comprising a plurality of data packets;

identify a characteristic for the plurality of the data packets; and

adjust the DRX parameter value in response to the observed characteristic, wherein the observed characteristic comprises latency.

16. The wireless network node of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of the data packets include data corresponding to at least one of: voice, video, internet data, web browsing sessions, upload/download file transfer, instant messaging, e-mail, navigation services, RSS feeds or streaming media.

17. The wireless network node of claim 15 , wherein the characteristic further includes at least one of: quality of service, grade of service or service level.

18. A wireless network node configured to:

monitor a traffic flow associated with a communication between user equipment and a network, the traffic flow comprising a plurality of data packets;

identify a triggering event based upon an observed characteristic of the plurality of the data packets, wherein the observed characteristic comprises latency; and

adjust the DRX parameter value in response to identifying the triggering event.

19. A wireless network node configured to:

monitor a traffic flow associated with a communication between user equipment and a network, the traffic flow comprising a plurality of data packets;

identify a characteristic for the plurality of the data packets; and

adjust the DRX parameter value in response to the observed characteristic, wherein the observed characteristic comprises latency.
