Abstract

A method of providing spinal stabilization is provided herein. More specifically, the method includes positioning a plurality of fixation assemblies within a plurality of vertebrae in a trans-lamina orientation wherein each fixation assembly includes a proximal portion configured to securely receive a stabilization element (e.g., a stabilization rod). The proximal portions of the various fixation assemblies can be aligned so as to secure at least one stabilization element in a desired position (e.g., along and above a midline of the patient's spine, adjacent and parallel to the midline). A system for providing spinal stabilization is also provided which utilizes trans-lamina delivery and positioning of fixation assemblies within target vertebrae thereby providing stronger fixation and a significant reduction in associated tissue damage.

Claims (26)

1. A method for providing spinal stabilization, comprising:

modifying at least a portion of a first vertebra;

placing a first fixation assembly within a first vertebra such that at least a portion of the first fixation assembly extends across the lamina of the first vertebra, the first fixation assembly having a distal portion configured to engage bone and a proximal portion configured to receive a stabilization element, wherein a majority of the distal portion of the first fixation assembly is positioned within the lamina of the first vertebra;

modifying at least a portion of a second vertebra;

placing a second fixation assembly within a second vertebra such that at least a portion of the second fixation assembly extends across the lamina of the second vertebra, the second fixation assembly having a distal portion configured to engage bone and a proximal portion configured to receive a stabilization element; and

securing a first stabilization element within the receiving portion of each of the first and second fixation assemblies such that the stabilization element maintains a substantially parallel orientation relative to a midline of a patient's spinal column.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising modifying at least a portion of a third vertebra, placing a third fixation assembly within the third vertebra such that at least a portion of the third fixation assembly extends across the lamina of the third vertebra, and securing the first stabilization member within a receiving portion of the third second fixation assembly.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of modifying includes removing a spinous process of a vertebra.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of modifying includes removing a portion of a spinous process of a vertebra.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the distal portion of the fixation assembly comprises a bone anchor having a threaded distal shank and a proximal head.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the proximal portion of the fixation assembly comprises a receiver element that is movable relative to the distal portion of the fixation assembly.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the receiver element is configured for polyaxial motion relative to the distal portion of the fixation assembly.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein each receiver element includes a U-shaped opening configured to receive the stabilization element.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first vertebra and the second vertebra are adjacent.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first vertebra and the second vertebra are non-adjacent.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first stabilization element is positioned on one side of the midline of the spinal column.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising installing a second stabilization element contralateral to the first stabilization element.

13. A method for stabilizing a spine, comprising:

delivering into a separate one of a series of vertebrae a fixation assembly, each fixation assembly having a threaded shank coupled to a movable receiving head, the threaded shank of the fixation assembly being delivered across a lamina of each vertebra of the series of vertebrae and into a lateral mass of the vertebra, wherein a substantial portion of the threaded shank is positioned within the lamina of each vertebra; and

securing a first stabilization element within each movable receiving head such that the stabilization element extends along one side of a patient's spine and maintains a substantially parallel orientation relative to a midline of the patient's spine.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising modifying at least a portion of each of the series of vertebra before the step of securing.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the series of vertebrae is a series of adjacent vertebrae.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the series of vertebrae is a series of non-adjacent vertebrae.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the series of vertebrae comprises a number of vertebrae selected from the group consisting of 2, 3, and 4.

18. The method of claim 13 , further comprising securing a second stabilization element contralateral to the first stabilizing element.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein as a result of the step of delivering, a distal end of the threaded shank is positioned contralateral to the receiving head.
