Abstract

A rock drilling bit having PDC radial bearings has journal and cone bearing surfaces with increased contact area to increase load support. The radius of curvature of the bearing pin journal and cone bearing surfaces are matched or conformed on the bearing pressure side. The conformal journal surfaces may be formed on the main journal bearing, the pilot pin radial bearing, or both surfaces. In addition, diamond inlays may be located on the bearing surfaces of the cone, the bearing pin, or both components.

Claims (35)

1. An earth boring bit, comprising:

a bit body having at least one depending leg;

a bearing pin extending from the leg and having an axis on a radial center and a bearing surface;

a cone having a cavity with a radial center and a cavity radius, the cone being slidingly mounted to the bearing surface of the bearing pin and being rotatable relative to the bearing pin;

at least one of the bearing surface of the bearing pin and the cavity of the cone comprises a diamond-enhanced wear surface; and

only a minimum clearance span of the bearing surface is formed at a direct contact radius that is substantially equal to the cavity radius.

2. A bit according to claim 1 , wherein the diamond-enhanced wear surface is segmented.

3. A bit according to claim 1 , wherein the radial center of the bearing pin is eccentric to an axis of the direct contact radius.

4. A bit according to claim 1 , wherein the radial center of the bearing pin is eccentric to the radial center of the cone.

5. A bit according to claim 1 , wherein the bearing pin further comprises a pilot pin radial bearing surface on a distal end of the bearing pin.

6. A bit according to claim 5 , wherein both the main journal bearing surface and the pilot pin radial bearing surface have minimum clearance spans that are formed at radii that are equal to respective cavity radii.

7. A bit according to claim 1 , wherein the direct contact radius of the minimum clearance span is longer than a non-contact radius of a non-contact surface of the bearing pin.

8. A bit according to claim 7 , wherein the direct contact radius originates from a direct contact axis, the non-contact radius originates from a non-contact axis, and the direct contact and non-contact axes are coaxial.

9. A bit according to claim 1 , wherein the cavity is cylindrical and defines a maximum potential contact area having an angular span of 180°, and the minimum clearance span is at least 130° of the maximum potential contact area.

10. An earth boring bit, comprising:

a bit body having at least one depending leg;

a bearing pin extending from the leg and having an axis on a radial center, a main journal bearing surface on a proximal end of the bearing pin, and a pilot pin radial bearing surface on a distal end of the bearing pin;

a cone having a cavity with a radial center and a cavity radius, the cone being slidingly mounted to the bearing surfaces of the bearing pin and being rotatable relative to the bearing pin;

at least one of the bearing surfaces of the bearing pin and the cavity of the cone comprise a diamond-enhanced wear surface; and

only a minimum clearance span of the main journal bearing surface is formed at a direct contact radius that is substantially equal to the cavity radius.

11. A bit according to claim 10 , wherein the radial center of the bearing pin is eccentric to an axis of the direct contact radius.

12. A bit according to claim 10 , wherein the radial center of the bearing pin is eccentric to the radial center of the cone.

13. A bit according to claim 10 , wherein both the main journal bearing surface and the pilot pin radial bearing surface have minimum clearance spans that are formed at radii that are equal to respective cavity radii.

14. A bit according to claim 10 , wherein the direct contact radius of the minimum clearance span is longer than a non-contact radius of a non-contact surface of the bearing pin.

16. A bit according to claim 10 , wherein the cavity is cylindrical and defines a maximum potential contact area having an angular span of 180°, and the minimum clearance span is at least 130° of the maximum potential contact area.

17. An earth boring bit, comprising:

a bit body having at least one depending leg;

a bearing pin extending from the leg and having an axis on a radial center and a bearing surface;

a cone having a cavity with a radial center and a cavity radius, the cone being slidingly mounted to the bearing surface of the bearing pin and being rotatable relative to the bearing pin;
