Abstract

Methods and apparatus for testing a network that reassembles fragments into datagrams. A packet receiver may extract a plurality of instrumentation blocks from a packet received from the network. The packet receiver may determine if the received packet constitutes a correctly reassembled datagram based on information contained within the plurality of instrumentation blocks. The packet receiver may accumulate and report test statistics indicative of a number of correctly reassembled datagrams received and a number of incorrectly reassembled datagrams received.

Claims (50)

1. A method for testing a network that reassembles fragments into datagrams, comprising:

a packet receiver receiving a packet from the network;

the packet receiver extracting a plurality of instrumentation blocks from a payload of the received packet, each of the plurality of instrumentation blocks contains information identifying a datagram, information identifying an expected location of the instrumentation block within the datagram, and information defining an expected length of the datagram;

the packet receiver determining if the received packet constitutes a correctly reassembled datagram based on the information contained within the plurality of instrumentation blocks; and

the packet receiver accumulating and reporting test statistics indicative of a number of correctly reassembled datagrams received and a number of incorrectly reassembled datagrams received.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information identifying a respective datagram includes a packet group identifier and a packet sequence number.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the information identifying the location of the instrumentation block within the datagram includes at least one of an instrumentation block number and a fragment offset.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information defining an expected length of the datagram includes at least one of the total number of instrumentation blocks within the datagram and the total payload length of the datagram.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the packet receiver determines that the received packet is a correctly reassembled datagram if all of the following conditions are satisfied:

all of the instrumentation blocks extracted from the received packet contain identical information identifying a single datagram;

all of the instrumentation blocks are in a correct sequence as indicated by information within each instrumentation block; and

a length of the received packet is equal to an expected length of the datagram as indicated by information within each instrumentation block.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

a traffic generator generating a plurality of fragments and transmitting the plurality of fragments over the network, wherein

the plurality of fragments are configured to be reassembled into a single datagram; and

a payload of each of the plurality of fragments includes a respective instrumentation block containing information identifying the datagram, information identifying an expected location of the instrumentation block within the datagram, and information defining an expected length of the datagram.

7. An apparatus for testing a network that reassembles fragments into datagrams, comprising:

a packet receiver unit configured for

receiving a packet from the network;

extracting a plurality of instrumentation blocks from a payload of the received packet, each of the plurality of instrumentation blocks contains information identifying the datagram, information identifying an expected location of the instrumentation block within the datagram, and information defining an expected length of the datagram;

determining if the received packet constitutes a correctly reassembled datagram based on information contained within the plurality of instrumentation blocks; and

accumulating and reporting test statistics indicative of a number of correctly reassembled datagrams received and a number of incorrectly reassembled datagrams received.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the information identifying a respective datagram includes a packet group identifier and a packet sequence number.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the information identifying the location of the instrumentation block within the datagram includes at least one of an instrumentation block number and a fragment offset.

10. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the information defining an expected length of the datagram includes at least one of the total number of instrumentation blocks within the datagram and the total payload length of the datagram.

11. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the packet receiver determines that the received packet is a correctly reassembled datagram if all of the following conditions are satisfied:

all of the instrumentation blocks extracted from the received packet contain identical information identifying a single datagram;

all of the instrumentation blocks are in a correct sequence as indicated by information within each instrumentation block; and

a length of the received packet is equal to an expected length of the datagram as indicated by information within each instrumentation block.

12. The apparatus of claim 7 , further comprising:

a traffic generator configured for generating a plurality of fragments and transmitting the plurality of fragments over the network, wherein

the plurality of fragments are configured to be reassembled into a single datagram; and

a payload of each of the plurality of fragments includes a respective instrumentation block containing information identifying the datagram, information identifying an expected location of the instrumentation block within the datagram, and information defining an expected length of the datagram.

13. A non-transitory machine readable storage media containing configuration data which, when used to configure a programmable hardware device, causes the programmable hardware device to be configured to include:

a packet receiver configured for

receiving a packet from the network;

extracting a plurality of instrumentation blocks from a payload of the received packet, each of the plurality of instrumentation blocks contains information identifying a respective datagram, information identifying an expected location of the instrumentation block within the datagram, and information defining an expected length of the datagram;

determining if the received packet constitutes a correctly reassembled datagram based on information contained within the plurality of instrumentation blocks; and

accumulating and reporting test statistics indicative of a number of correctly reassembled datagrams received and a number of incorrectly reassembled datagrams received.

14. The non-transitory machine readable storage media of claim 13 , wherein the information identifying a respective datagram includes a packet group identifier and a packet sequence number.

15. The non-transitory machine readable storage media of claim 13 , wherein the information identifying the location of the instrumentation block within the datagram includes at least one of an instrumentation block number and a fragment offset.

16. The non-transitory machine readable storage media of claim 13 , wherein the information defining an expected length of the datagram includes at least one of the total number of instrumentation blocks within the datagram and the total payload length of the datagram.

17. The non-transitory machine readable storage media of claim 13 , wherein the packet receiver determines that the received packet is a correctly reassembled datagram if all of the following conditions are satisfied:

all of the instrumentation blocks extracted from the received packet contain identical information identifying a single datagram;

all of the instrumentation blocks are in a correct sequence as indicated by information within each instrumentation block; and
