Abstract

The present invention is a cargo inspection system, employing a radiation source, capable of scanning vehicles and/or cargo in a wide range of sizes, including conventional imaging areas as well as taller and bulkier enclosures at sufficiently optimal efficacy and overall throughput. In one embodiment, the present invention is a multiple pass inspection method for inspecting vehicles and their cargo, comprising a first pass scan, wherein said first pass scan includes moving a radiation source at a suitable scanning distance, rotating a radiation source at a suitable scanning angle, and moving said radiation source along an object under inspection.

Claims (24)

1. An inspection system for inspecting vehicles and their cargo, comprising:

a radiation source attached to a gantry, wherein said radiation source is adapted to move in a vertical direction and wherein, after movement in a vertical direction, said radiation source is adapted to rotate in a range of 0 to 90 degrees; and

a detector array, wherein said detector array pivots around an axis to maintain alignment with said radiation source after movement of said radiation source.

2. The inspection system of claim 1 , wherein said radiation source is an X-ray source.

3. The inspection system of claim 1 , wherein said radiation source is a gamma source.

4. The inspection system of claim 1 , wherein said radiation source is a linear accelerator.

5. The inspection system of claim 1 , wherein the detector array is rotated about an axis and wherein said rotation of the detector array aligns the detector array with the radiation source during operation of the radiation source.

6. The inspection system of claim 1 , wherein the gantry is moveable.

7. The inspection system of claim 1 , wherein the radiation source is adapted to conduct a first scan of an object at a first vertical position and at a first scanning angle and, after completion of said first scan, is adapted to move to a second vertical position and rotate in a range of 0 to 90 degrees.

8. The inspection system of claim 7 , wherein, after the radiation source moves to a second vertical position and rotates in a range of 0 to 90 degrees, the radiation source conducts a second scan at a second scanning angle.

9. The inspection system of claim 8 , wherein the first scanning angle is different from said second scanning angle.

10. The inspection system of claim 8 , wherein the first scan generates a first scanning region, wherein the second scan generates a second scanning region, and wherein the first scanning region is different from the second scanning region.

11. The inspection system of claim 7 , wherein the first scan produces an image of the object, wherein said image includes a width of the object of up to 3 meters and a height of the object of up to 2 meters.

12. The inspection system of claim 7 , wherein the radiation source moves to a second vertical position and rotates in a range of 0 to 90 degrees to conduct a second scan at a second scanning angle if the object is taller than 2 meters.

13. The inspection system of claim 7 , wherein the detector array aligns the detector array with the radiation source during the first scan.

14. The inspection system of claim 8 , wherein the detector array is adapted to rotate about an axis and wherein said rotation of the detector array aligns the detector array with the radiation source during the second scan.

15. The inspection system of claim 7 , wherein the gantry has a bottom, middle, and top.

16. The inspection system of claim 7 , wherein the first vertical position is at the bottom of the gantry.

17. The inspection system of claim 8 , wherein the gantry has a bottom, middle, and top.

18. The inspection system of claim 8 , wherein the second vertical position is at the middle of the gantry or at the top of the gantry.

19. An inspection system for inspecting vehicles and their cargo, comprising:

a radiation source attached to a gantry, wherein said radiation source is adapted to move in a vertical direction and wherein, after movement in a vertical direction, said radiation source is adapted to rotate in a range of 0 to 90 degrees; and

a detector array, wherein said detector array pivots around an axis to maintain alignment with said radiation source after movement of said radiation source, wherein the radiation source is adapted to conduct a first scan of an object at a first vertical position and at a first scanning angle and, after completion of said first scan, is adapted to move to a second vertical position and rotate in a range of 0 to 90 degrees.

20. The inspection system of claim 19 , wherein, after the radiation source moves to a second vertical position and rotates in a range of 0 to 90 degrees, the radiation source conducts a second scan at a second scanning angle.
