Abstract

An AC to DC converter system is disclosed in which a conversion circuit for converting an AC input signal to a DC output signal is operably coupled with an enabling circuit designed for sensing and output parameter indicative of the presence or absence of a load at the DC output. The system is designed so that the conversion circuit operates in an inactive standby state when there is no load, and in an active state for supplying DC power when a load is present. The enabling circuit is configured to operate using low power.

Claims (30)

1. An AC to DC converter system comprising:

an input configured for receiving an AC power input signal;

a conversion circuit for converting the AC input signal to a DC output signal, the conversion circuit operably coupled with the input and to an output for outputting the DC output signal;

an enabling circuit configured to sense an output parameter; and

an energy storage device coupled to the DC output signal for supplying power to the enabling circuit,

wherein the enabling circuit is further configured for switching the conversion circuit between an active state and an inactive state in response to the sensed output parameter.

2. The system according to claim 1 wherein the output parameter comprises a voltage.

3. The system according to claim 1 wherein the output parameter comprises a current.

4. The system according to claim 1 wherein the output parameter comprises a power signal.

5. The system according to claim 1 wherein the output parameter comprises a capacitance.

6. The system according to claim 1 wherein the output parameter comprises a magnetic field.

7. The system according to claim 1 wherein the output parameter comprises an impedance.

8. The system according to claim 1 wherein the output parameter comprises a wireless communication signal.

9. The system according to claim 1 wherein the output parameter comprises an optical signal.

10. The system according to claim 1 wherein the output parameter comprises a timing signal.

11. The system according to claim 1 wherein the enabling circuit further comprises a low power comparator coupled for monitoring the output, and a capacitor coupled for supplying power to the low power comparator.

12. The system according to claim 1 wherein the enabling circuit further comprises a timer operably coupled for periodically switching the conversion circuit from an inactive state to an active state.

13. The system according to claim 1 wherein the DC output is operably coupled with portable electronic apparatus.

14. The system according to claim 1 wherein the DC output is operably coupled with portable communications apparatus.

15. The system according to claim 1 wherein the DC output is operably coupled with portable imaging apparatus.

16. The system according to claim 1 wherein the DC output is operably coupled with portable display apparatus.

17. The system according to claim 1 wherein the DC output is operably coupled with portable audio apparatus.

18. The system according to claim 1 wherein the DC output is operably coupled with portable computing apparatus.

19. An AC to DC converter system comprising:

an input configured for receiving an AC power input signal;

a conversion circuit for converting the AC input signal to a DC output signal, the conversion circuit operably coupled with the input and to an output for outputting the DC output signal; and

an enabling circuit configured to sense an output parameter, the enabling circuit including:

a low power comparator for monitoring the output, and

a capacitor coupled to the DC output signal for supplying power to the low power comparator,

wherein the enabling circuit is further configured for switching the conversion circuit between an active state and an inactive state in response to the sensed output parameter.
