Abstract

An electrosurgical generator apparatus controls a variable output signal to electrodes. The generator apparatus operates in a cut mode, a coagulation mode or a stimulate mode. The generator apparatus comprises a DC power supply that provides regulated low voltage and high voltage outputs and a radio frequency (RF) waveform generator circuit that provides pulse duration modulation (PDM) of a carrier signal. The carrier signal directly affects the variable output signal to the electrodes. A control circuit controls a variable output signal to electrodes used in electrosurgical procedures. The control circuit comprises a DC power supply circuit that provides regulated low voltage and high voltage outputs and an RF waveform generator circuit that provides pulse duration modulation of a carrier signal. The carrier signal directly affects the variable output signal to the electrodes.

Claims (16)

1. A method for detecting complex impedance using an electrosurgical generator apparatus that controls a variable output signal to a pair of electrodes, the method comprising:

providing a reference signal to a reflectometer bridge of an impedance monitoring circuit;

superimposing monitor drive signals onto an output signal applied to leads of the electrodes across which a complex impedance to be measured is present, the monitor drive signals being derived from the reference signal;

receiving, at the reflectometer bridge, feedback signals from the pair of leads of the electrodes;

applying a conditioned form of the feedback signals to each of an in-phase bridge detector and a quadrature bridge detector of the impedance monitoring circuit;

outputting, by the in-phase bridge detector, an in-phase bridge signal corresponding to an overall real component of the measured complex impedance, and outputting, by the quadrature bridge detector, a quadrature bridge signal corresponding to an overall imaginary component of the measured complex impedance;

receiving, at a controller, the in-phase and quadrature bridge signals, an in-phase reference signal, and a quadrature reference signal; and

determining, by the controller and based on the in-phase and quadrature bridge signals and the in-phase and quadrature reference signals, a magnitude and phase angle of the complex impedance.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing the reference signal to an in-phase reference detector that outputs the in-phase reference signal, the in-phase reference signal corresponding to a real component of the reference signal; and

providing the reference signal to a quadrature reference detector that outputs the quadrature reference signal, the quadrature reference signal corresponding to an imaginary component of the reference signal.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein determining the magnitude and phase of the complex impedance includes:

using the real component of the reference signal to compensate out an actual impedance of the electrodes from the overall real component of the measured complex impedance, and

using the imaginary component of the reference signal to compensate out the actual impedance of the electrodes from the overall imaginary component of the measured complex impedance.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reflectometer bridge outputs the feedback signals to a bridge conditioning circuit, which outputs the conditioned form of the feedback signals.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the impedance monitor samples the feedback signals at 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270° phase angles of the feedback signals.
