Abstract

A liquid crystal display device and method includes a pair of substrates, a liquid crystal layer sandwiched therebetween, first and second alignment films formed on respective ones of the substrates, at least one first projecting portion which is disposed between the first alignment film and one of the substrates, and at least one second projecting portion disposed between the second alignment film and the other of the substrates, facing the at least one first projecting portion. A height of the at least one first projecting portion is smaller than a height of the at least one second projecting portion, and an area of an upper surface of the at least one first projecting portion is smaller than an area of an upper surface of the at least one second projecting portion.

Claims (12)

1. A manufacturing method of a liquid crystal display device comprising:

a first step for forming at least one first projecting portion on a first substrate, and a first alignment film on the first substrate and the at least one first projecting portion;

a second step for forming at least one second projecting portion on a second substrate which has a height larger than a height of the at least one first projecting portion and an has area of an upper surface of the at least one second projecting portion is larger than an area of an upper surface of the at least one first projecting portion, and for forming a second alignment film on the second substrate and the at least one second projecting portion;

a third step for baking the first alignment film; and

a fourth step for radiating polarized light containing ultraviolet rays to the first alignment film,

wherein a film thickness “d 1 ” of the first alignment film on the at least one first projecting portion after the fourth step and a film thickness “d 2 ” of the second alignment film on the at least one second projecting portion satisfy a formula (1) and a formula (2):

0nm<d1<30nm  (1)

d2<d1  (2).

2. A manufacturing method of a liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a fifth step for baking the second alignment film, and radiating polarized light containing ultraviolet rays to the second alignment film.

3. A manufacturing method of a liquid crystal display device according to claim 2 , further comprising:

a step for forming a thin film transistor, a pixel electrode connected to the thin film transistor, and a counter electrode on the first substrate before the first step.
