Abstract

A method of authenticating a user of a computing device is proposed, together with computing device on which the method is implemented. In the method a modified base image is overlaid with a modified overlay image on a display and at least one of the modified base image and modified overlay image is moved by the user. In addition to the moving, a change in orientation of at least one of the modified base image and the modified overlay image is required. Positive authentication is indicated in response to the base image reference point on the modified base image being aligned with the overlay image reference point on the modified overlay image after moving through at least one other pre-selected reference point.

Claims (34)

1. One or more non-transitory computer readable media having computer readable instructions stored thereon for authenticating a user of a computing device, the computing device having a memory storing a base image and an overlay image, the base image having a base image reference point, and the overlay image having a overlay image reference point, the instructions, when executed by a processor, direct the computing device to:

generate a modified base image;

generate a modified overlay image;

display, on a display, the modified base image overlaid by the modified overlay image;

receive an input for moving one of the modified base image and the modified overlay image;

move the one of the modified base image and the modified overlay image relative to the other of the modified base image and the modified overlay image in response to the input; and

in response to alignment of the base image reference point on the modified base image with the overlay image reference point on the modified overlay image at a point on the display after one of the base image reference point and the overlay image reference point passes through at least one other reference point on the modified base image or the modified overlay image, as the one of the modified base image and the modified overlay image is moved, indicate positive authentication.

2. The one or more non-transitory computer readable media of claim 1 , wherein the at least one other reference point comprises a path of points through which the one of the base image reference point and the overlay image reference point that is moved must move to achieve positive authentication.

3. The one or more non-transitory computer readable media of claim 1 , wherein the movement of the one of the modified base image and the modified overlay image comprises continuous movement until alignment is reached.

4. The one or more non-transitory computer readable media of claim 1 , wherein the movement of the one of the modified base image and the modified overlay image comprises stopping at the at least one other reference point for a designated period of time.

5. The one or more non-transitory computer readable media of claim 1 , wherein the number of other reference points that must be passed through varies with a security level associated with the authenticating.

6. The one or more non-transitory computer readable media of claim 1 , wherein positive authentication further requires that the one of the modified base image and the modified overlay image that is moved continues to move after alignment.

7. The one or more non-transitory computer readable media of claim 1 , wherein positive authentication further requires that the one of the modified base image and the modified overly image that is moved moves a minimum distance after alignment.

8. A method of authenticating a user of a computing device, the computing device having a memory storing a base image and an overlay image, the base image having a base image reference point, and the overlay image having a overlay image reference point, the method comprising:

generating a modified base image;

generating a modified overlay image;

displaying, on a display, the modified base image overlaid by the modified overlay image;

receiving an input for moving one of the modified base image and the modified overlay image;

moving the one of the modified base image and the modified overlay image relative to the other of the modified base image and the modified overlay image in response to the input; and

in response to alignment of the base image reference point on the modified base image with the overlay image reference point on the modified overlay image at a point on the display after one of the base image reference point and the overlay image reference point passes through at least one other reference point on the modified base image or the modified overlay image as the one of the modified base image and the modified overlay image is moved, indicating positive authentication.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the at least one other reference point comprises a path of points through which the one of the base image reference point and the overlay image reference point that is moved must move to achieve positive authentication.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the moving comprises continuous movement until alignment is reached.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the moving comprises stopping at the at least one other reference point for a designated period of time.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the number of other reference points that must be passed through varies with a security level associated with the authenticating.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein positive authentication further requires that the one of the modified base image and the modified overlay image that is moved continues to move after alignment.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein positive authentication further requires that the one of the modified base image and the modified overlay image that is moved moves a minimum distance after alignment.

15. A computing device comprising:

a processor;

a display; and

one or more non-transitory computer readable media having computer readable instructions stored thereon for authenticating a user of the computing device, the computing device having a memory storing a base image and an overlay image, the base image having a base image reference point, and the overlay image having a overlay image reference point, the instructions, when executed by the processor direct the computing device to: generate a modified base image; generate a modified overlay image; display, on the display, the modified base image overlaid by the modified overlay image; receive an input for moving one of the modified base image and the modified overlay image; move the one of the modified base image and the modified overlay image relative to the other of the modified base image and the modified overlay image in response to the input; and in response to alignment of the base image reference point on the modified base image with the overlay image reference point on the modified overlay image at a point on the display after one of the base image reference point and the overlay image reference point passes through at least one other reference point on the modified base image or the modified overlay image as the one of the modified base image and the modified overlay image is moved, indicating positive authentication.

16. The computing device of claim 15 , wherein the display comprises a touch screen and the input is received via the touch screen.

17. The computing device of claim 15 , comprising a mobile electronic device.

18. The computing device of claim 15 , wherein the display comprises a multi-touch screen and the input is received via the multi-touch screen.

19. The computing device of claim 18 , wherein the input comprises two or more touches.
