Abstract

Compositions and methods of using tissue engineered blood vessels to repair and regenerate blood vessels of patients with vascular disease are disclosed.

Claims (13)

1 . A tubular construct for a tissue engineered blood vessel comprising an inner braided mesh tube, having an inner surface and an outer surface, an electrostatically spun sheet on the outer surface of the inner braided mesh tube, and an outer braided mesh tube on the electrostatically spun sheet.

2 . The tubular construct of claim 1 , wherein said inner braided mesh tube and said outer braided mesh tube are prepared from poly(para-dioxanone).

3 . The tubular construct of claim 1 , wherein said electrostatically spun sheet is prepared from homopolymers and copolymers of monomers selected from the group consisiting of lactide, glycolide, epsilon-caprolactone, p-dioxanone, and trimethylene carbonate.

4 . The tubular construct of claim 1 , further comprising cells selected from the group consisting of endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, fibrobasts, human umbilical cord derived cells, mammary artery derived cells, and combinations thereof.

5 . A method of making a tissue engineered blood vessel comprising the steps of:

a. Providing a first braided mesh tube;

b. Placing the first braided mesh tube on a mandrel;

c. Providing an electrostatically spun sheet;

d. Rolling the electrostatically spun sheet on the first braided mesh tube;

e. Providing a second braided mesh tube; and

f. Slipping the second braided mesh tube over the rolled electrostatically spun sheet.

6 . The method of claim 5 further comprising seeding said electrostatically spun sheet with cells.

7 . The method of claim 6 further comprising culturing the tube in a bioreactor.
