Latex binders, aqueous coatings and paints having freeze-thaw stability and methods for using same
View Patent ↗Disclosed are latex polymers and an aqueous coating compositions having excellent freeze-thaw stability, open time, stain resistance, low temperature film formation, foam resistance, block resistance, adhesion, water sensitivity and a low-VOC content. The latex polymers and aqueous coating compositions include at least one latex polymer derived from at least one monomer copolymerized or blended with an alkoxylated compound, for example an alkoxylated tristyrylphenol or an alkoxylated tributylphenol. Also provided is an aqueous coating composition including at least one latex polymer, at least one pigment, water and at least one freeze-thaw additive.
1. A method of imparting freeze-thaw stability to a polymer coating composition having a VOC level of less than about 100 g/L, comprising adding to the composition an effective amount of an additive of structural formula IIA:
wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are independently selected from the group consisting of:
butyl, tert-butyl, isobutyl,
wherein:
X is a divalent hydrocarbon radical comprising a linear or branched alkylene radical having from about 2 to 8 carbon atoms;
n is an integer of from 1 to 100;
R 5 comprises —OH, —OCH 3 , —OC 2 H 5 , —OC 3 H 7 , —OC 4 H 9 , —OC 5 H 11 , —OC 6 H 13 , —Cl, —Br, —CN, phosphonate (—PO 3 − M + ), phosphate (—PO 4 − M + ), sulfate (—SO 4 − M + ), sulfonate (—SO 3 − M + ), carboxylate (COO − M + ), a nonionic group, or a quaternary ammonium ion, and
M + is a cation;
further wherein the effective amount is an amount of the additive greater than about 1.3% by weight of the polymer.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition has a VOC level of less than about 50 g/L.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the effective amount is an amount of the additive greater than about 1.6% by weight of the polymer.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the effective amount is an amount of the additive greater than about 2% by weight of the polymer.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the effective amount is an amount of the additive greater than about 7.5% by weight of the polymer.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the effective amount is an amount of the additive greater than about 8% by weight of the polymer.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the effective amount is an amount of the additive greater than about 10% by weight of the polymer.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the effective amount is an amount of the additive greater than about 20% by weight of the polymer.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein n is an integer ranging from about 3 to about 80.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein n is an integer ranging from about 10 to about 50.
11. The method of claim 1 , wherein n is an integer ranging from about 20 to about 50.
12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the additive has the structural formula of:

R 5 comprises —OH, —OCH 3 , —OC 2 H 5 , —OC 3 H 7 , —OC 5 H 11 , —OC 6 H 13 , OC 4 H 9 , —Cl, —Br, —CN, phosphonate (—PO 3 − M + ), phosphate (—PO 4 − M + ), sulfate (—SO 4 − M + ), sulfonate (—SO 3 − M + ), carboxylate (COO − M + ), a nonionic group, or a quaternary ammonium ion, and
M + is a cation.
13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the effective amount is an amount of the additive greater than about 1.6% by weight of the polymer.
14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the effective amount is an amount of the additive greater than about 2% by weight of the polymer.
15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the effective amount is an amount of the additive greater than about 8% by weight of the polymer.
16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the effective amount is an amount of the additive greater than about 10% by weight of the polymer.
17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the effective amount is an amount of the additive greater than about 20% by weight of the polymer.
18. The method of claim 12 , wherein n is an integer ranging from about 3 to about 80.
19. The method of claim 12 , wherein n is an integer ranging from about 10 to about 50.
20. The method of claim 12 , wherein n is an integer ranging from about 20 to about 50.
21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polymer coating composition is an aqueous composition.
22. The method of claim 1 , wherein the coating composition comprises a paint composition.
23. The method of claim 1 , wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 independently comprise:
butyl, tert-butyl, isobutyl,
24. The method of claim 1 , wherein said composition comprises less than 2.0% of antifreeze agents based on the total weight of the composition.
25. The method of claim 24 , wherein said composition is substantially free of antifreeze agents.
26. The method of claim 25 , wherein said composition does not comprise a coalescent agent.
