Abstract

Techniques are described herein for, among other things, selecting and/or modifying an ad based on an emotional state of a user. The user's emotional state is determined based on the user's online activity. Advertisement(s) are selected and/or modified for provision to the user based on the user's emotional state. An advertisement may be modified in any of a variety of ways. For example, a color that is included in an advertisement may be replaced with a different color. In another example, a color filter may be applied to the advertisement. In yet another example, visual attribute(s) of the advertisement may be modified. Examples of a visual attribute include, but are not limited to, hue, brightness, contrast, and saturation.

in a networked device of an online advertisement serving system comprising at least one memory and at least one processor configured to execute instructions stored in the memory:

obtaining, by the at least one processor, a plurality of online advertisements;

for each online advertisement of the plurality of online advertisements, automatically determining, by the at least one processor, a respective predicted emotional effect of the online advertisement on viewers by analyzing a respective visual feature of the online advertisement, and automatically associating, by the at least one processor, the online advertisement with respective metadata that indicates the determined respective predicted emotional effect;

automatically determining, by the at least one processor, an emotional state of a user based on an online activity of the user;

automatically selecting, by the at least one processor, in response to a request from a client device for online content to display to a user, a target advertisement from the plurality of online advertisements, based on the emotional state of the user and a respective determined predicted emotional effect on viewers of an online advertisement of the plurality of online advertisements;

automatically modifying, by the at least one processor, the selected target advertisement by de-emphasizing a color based feature associated with an emotional effect that is counter to the emotional state of the user; and

automatically providing, by the at least one processor, the modified target advertisement to the client device for display to the user with the online content.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of online advertisements corresponds to a plurality of respective specified emotional states; and

wherein selecting the target advertisement comprises:

selecting, by the at least one processor, a first online advertisement of the plurality of online advertisements that corresponds to the emotional state of the user.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, by the at least one processor, the plurality of online advertisements according to an ad targeting operation based on information regarding the user that is different from the emotional state of the user;

wherein selecting the target advertisement further comprises:

selecting, by the at least one processor, the target advertisement based on the information regarding the user that is different from the emotional state of the user.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein each online advertisement of the plurality of online advertisements is pre-associated with additional respective metadata that indicates one or more intended emotional states that the advertiser intends the online advertisement to correspond to; and

wherein selecting the target advertisement comprises:

determining, by the at least one processor, that the respective additional metadata that is associated with the target advertisement indicates an intended emotional state that is substantially same as the emotional state of the user.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating, by the at least one processor, for each online advertisement of the plurality of online advertisements, the respective metadata that indicates the determined respective predicted emotional effect.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the emotional state of the user comprises:

determining, by the at least one processor, the emotional state of the user based on online content that is consumed by the user.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the emotional state of the user comprises:

determining, by the at least one processor, the emotional state of the user based on at least one of blog text, an online video, or online music that is consumed by the user.

8. A computer-implemented system comprising:

at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising a set of instructions for selecting an online advertisement based on an emotional state of a user; and

at least one processor in communication with the computer-readable storage medium that is configured to execute the set of instructions stored in the computer-readable storage medium:

obtain a plurality of online advertisements;

for each online advertisement of the plurality of online advertisements, automatically determine a respective predicted emotional effect of the online advertisement on viewers by analyzing a respective visual feature of the online advertisement, and automatically associate the online advertisement with respective metadata that indicates the determined respective predicted emotional effect;

automatically determine an emotional state of a user based on an online activity of the user;

automatically select, in response to a request from a client device for online content to display to a user, a target advertisement from the plurality of online advertisements, based on the emotional state of the user and a respective determined predicted emotional effect on viewers of an online advertisement of the plurality of online advertisements;

automatically modify the selected target advertisement by emphasizing a color-based feature of the advertisement associated with an emotional effect that matches the emotional state of the user and de-emphasizing a color based feature associated with an emotional effect that is counter to the emotional state of the user; and

automatically provide the modified target advertisement to the client device for display to the user with the online content.

9. The computer-implemented system of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of online advertisements corresponds to a plurality of respective specified emotional states; and

wherein to select the target advertisement the at least one processor is configured to select a first online advertisement of the plurality of advertisements that corresponds to the emotional state of the user.

10. The computer-implemented system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to determine the plurality of online advertisements according to an ad targeting operation based on information regarding the user that is different from the emotional state of the user;

wherein to select the target advertisement the at least one processor is configured to select the target advertisement based on the information regarding the user that is different from the emotional state of the user.

11. The computer-implemented system of claim 8 , wherein each online advertisement of the plurality of online advertisements is pre-associated with additional respective metadata that indicates one or more intended emotional states that the advertiser intends the online advertisement to correspond to; and

wherein to select the target advertisement the at least one processor is configured to determine that the respective additional metadata that is associated with the target advertisement indicates an intended emotional state that is substantially same as the emotional state of the user.

12. The computer-implemented system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to generate, for each online advertisement of the plurality of online advertisements, the respective metadata that indicates the determined respective predicted emotional effect.

13. The computer-implemented system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to determine the emotional state of the user based on online content that is consumed by the user.

14. The computer-implemented system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to determine the emotional state of the user based on at least one of blog text, an online video, or online music that is consumed by the user.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising computer program logic for enabling a processor-based system to select at least one online advertisement based on an emotional state of a user, the computer program logic configured to direct at least one processor to perform acts of:

obtaining a plurality of online advertisements;

for each advertisement of the plurality of online advertisements, automatically determining a respective predicted emotional effect of the online advertisement on viewers by analyzing a respective visual feature of the online advertisement, and automatically associating the online advertisement with respective metadata that indicates the determined respective predicted emotional effect;

automatically determining an emotional state of a user based on an online activity of the user;
