Abstract

A medical prosthesis for use within the body which is formed of radiation treated ultra high molecular weight polyethylene having substantially no detectable free radicals, is described. Preferred prostheses exhibit reduced production of particles from the prosthesis during wear of the prosthesis, and are substantially oxidation resistant. Methods of manufacture of such devices and material used therein are also provided.

Claims (49)

1. A method for making a cross-linked ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) article having substantially no detectable free radicals, comprising the steps of:

a) providing UHMWPE having polymeric chains;

b) heating the UHMWPE at a temperature that is below the melting point of the UHMWPE;

c) irradiating the UHMWPE at a dose rate to provide a total absorbed dose to

(i) cross-link the polymeric chains of the UHMWPE, and

(ii) generate irradiation-induced heat,

wherein the irradiation partially melts the UHMWPE, wherein the irradiation is performed in a manner to reduce the loss of heat; and

d) cooling the heated UHMWPE.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the UHMWPE is insulated during the irradiation.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein following the irradiation and prior to the cooling the UHMWPE is further heated.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein an oven provides the further heat.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the dose rate is 2 to 3,000 Mrads/minute.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the cross-linked UHMWPE has two melting peaks.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the cross-linked UHMWPE has three melting peaks.

8. A method for making cross-linked ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) article having substantially no detectable free radicals, comprising the steps of:

a) providing UHMWPE having polymeric chains;

b) heating the UHMWPE to a temperature of no more than 90° C.;

c) irradiating the UHMWPE at a dose rate to provide a total absorbed dose to

(i) cross-link the polymeric chains of the UHMWPE, and

(ii) generate irradiation-induced heat,

wherein the irradiation partially melts the UHMWPE, wherein the irradiation is performed in a manner to reduce the loss of heat; and

d) cooling the UHMWPE.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the UHMWPE is insulated during the irradiation.

10. The method according to claim 8 , wherein following the irradiation and prior to the cooling the UHMWPE is further heated.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein an oven provides the further heat.

12. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the dose rate is 2 to 3,000 Mrads/minute.

13. A method for making cross-linked ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) article having substantially no detectable free radicals, comprising the steps of:

a) providing UHMWPE having polymeric chains;

b) heating the UHMWPE to a temperature ranging from about 90° C. to below the melting point of the UHMWPE;

c) irradiating the UHMWPE at a dose rate to provide a total absorbed dose to

(i) cross-link the polymeric chains of the UHMWPE, and

(ii) generate irradiation-induced heat,

wherein the irradiation partially melts the UHMWPE, wherein the irradiation is performed in a manner to reduce the loss of heat; and

d) cooling the irradiated and heated UHMWPE.

14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the UHMWPE is insulated during the irradiation.

15. The method according to claim 13 , wherein following the irradiation and prior to the cooling the UHMWPE is further heated.

16. The method according to claim 15 , wherein an oven provides the further heat.

17. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the dose rate is 2 to 3,000 Mrads/minute.

18. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the cross-linked UHMWPE has two melting peaks.

19. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the cross-linked UHMWPE has three melting peaks.

20. A method for making a cross-linked ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) article having substantially no detectable free radicals, comprising the steps of:

a) providing UHMWPE having polymeric chains that is at room temperature or below room temperature;

b) irradiating the UHMWPE at a dose rate to provide a total absorbed dose to

(i) cross-link the polymeric chains of the UHMWPE, and

(ii) generate irradiation-induced heat,

wherein the irradiation partially melts the UHMWPE, wherein the irradiation is performed in a manner to reduce the loss of heat; and

c) cooling the UHMWPE.

21. The method according to claim 20 , wherein the UHMWPE is insulated during the irradiation.

22. The method according to claim 20 , wherein the dose rate is 2 to 3,000 Mrads/minute.
